Sitting on a peninsula in the southeast of Iceland, the quiet village of Djúpivogur is home to artists and creatives. The most expansive project is "Eggin í Gleðivík", a collection of 34 over-sized egg sculptures dotted along the water's edge.

We were greeted by our guide Hera who led us along the length of the local airstrip (mostly used by hobbyist pilots) to the almost deserted black sand beaches that Djúpivogur is known for. She described how local families, her own included, used the beach area for physical fitness and even for some alone time to contemplate the waves.

The S.A.L.T. program also incorporates the S.A.L.T. Lab, an interactive kitchen space where guests can join talented chefs and learn how to recreate local dishes.

Under the guidance of Chef Eva (a fellow Canadian!) we prepared fresh scallops in a tangy blueberry sauce and finished it off with burnt plum with honey and cinnamon, served over a cottage cheese and sour cream mixture. Who knew I could cook so well? 😉

It's inevitable that you will discover your favourite dining venue while travelling on a Silversea ship. My personal favourite has been the S.A.L.T. Kitchen!

The S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) program was introduced on Silversea's newest vessels Silver Moon, sister ship Silver Dawn, and the just-launched Silver Nova. The essence of S.A.L.T. is to allow guests to experience the cuisine of the destinations they travel to.

As part of this program the S.A.L.T. Kitchen is a restaurant that changes recipes and menus for every single destination, featuring regional specialties. Pictured here are stockfish croquettes with a skyr yoghurt mayonnaise, braised lamb cabbage rolls, and pönnukökur (Icelandic crepes) served with rhubarb jam and whipped cream.

For a ship with fewer than 600 guests, there are an astonishing variety of dining options aboard Silver Moon! The chameleon nature of the onboard restaurants means you will rarely see the same menu twice: a restaurant may be structured around one cuisine for lunchtime dining and feature a completely different menu in the evening.

And if you feel like taking some time to yourself while you eat, have room service delivered by your butler any time of the day or night!

The picturesque town of Seyðisfjörður, nestled in the fjord of the same name, is home to many colourful buildings. The "Blue Church of Iceland" is located at the end of the rainbow-painted high street, which features local craft shops.

The nearby Vök Baths are Iceland's newest geothermal destination (opened in 2019) and feature infinity pools floating on the surface of Lake Urriðavatn. The bravest souls can use provided ladders to leave the 30-40°C pools and go for a swim in the 10°C lake.

The only consolation to sailing away from Seyðisfjörður was knowing we had a fabulous dinner waiting for us back on board Silver Moon!

While many people will know of Húsavík thanks to the 2020 Will Ferrell comedy "Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga", it's main claim to fame is as the European capital of whale watching.

Before or after your whale watching tour you can relax at the GeoSea thermal baths which are designed as infinity pools overlooking the coast. The Husavik Whale Museum also provides insight into the history of Icelanders' relationship with whales and features several whale skeletons, including a blue whale.

Akureyri is Iceland's Capital of the North, only 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle. and the jumping off point to several natural wonders. The town itself is charming with grizzled statues of child-stealing trolls ( ) along the shopping street and knitted hungry creatures adorning the public garbage cans.

As part of the town's campaign they have even replaced all of the red traffic lights with heart shapes!

Our excursion from Akureyri took us to our first up close waterfall visit: Goðafoss ("Waterfall of the Gods"). From there the increasingly sulfur-tinged air led us inland to the Mývatn Nature Baths. As soon as we stepped into the milky blue water we could feel the rejeuvenating properties of the geothermal spring.

I continue to be impressed by Silversea’s all-inclusive pricing! Some other cruise line’s advertised prices seem like a great deal at first… but by the time you add in beverage packages, excursions, shipboard gratuities, and specialty dining up-charges that initially low price has ballooned by thousands of dollars. Your Silversea voyage *automatically* includes shore excursions at each port of call, multiple amazing restaurant options for each meal, 24 hour room service, beverages both at meal times and throughout the day, on-board gratuities, and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Much like the majority of a majestic iceberg hidden beneath the water, most of the planning that goes into creating an exceptional travel experience goes on out of sight from the client. My joy has always been to research the best options for my client's and their trip. As an independent travel consultant I am now unencumbered by sales quotas and pushing preferred suppliers, and I have been freed from walk-in inquiries that take my focus away from my loyal clients.
