Low-cost airline in Roatan main theme of next Town hall Meeting
on: September 17, 2016In: News, Tourism No Comments
In Friday’s Corporation meeting, was approved the call to a town hall meeting for October 8th in order to declare a municipal flag airline of low cost as a matter of public interest.

Mayor Dorn Ebanks said that “we want to make an approach to the central government so that they can support us and encourage this type of project because I feel that Honduras has lost sovereignty in commercial air space, since it left the market the once defunct airline Tan Sahsa. I think it’s time that Honduras recovers its shield and defense in commercial air space and in this way we can be competitive in terms of air connectivity and low-cost rates that are achievable for the entire population.”

According to Ebanks it is intended that Roatan becomes more accessible so that everyone can enjoy it, both national and international people and improve the conditions for many sectors of the insular area.

He also said that they are working with contacts that prop up the project and has the intention to obtain the lease of two to three aircraft but during these days will knock on other doors to deliver the population a reliable project.

Mayor Dorn Ebanks was grateful that there were no developments with the passing of Hurricane Earl off the coast of Roatan yesterday, “we have been in total normality, was activated the CODEM and is still active at this moment because remember that there are three components when referring to a storm, some alert or a warning, and is the before, during and after the storm. So I inform the people, thank God that here was no eventuality. “

Read This it's a true story
Are there buried treasures on Roatan? Read it here............

One of the first people who ever find buried treasure on Roatan was an archaeologist named Mitchell Hedges, who did a lot of exploring around the Bay Islands back in the 1920s and 30s. Mitchell Hedges lived on Roatan for seven years and he learned the island very well. He was one of the first people to ever explore the pirate ruins of Old Port Royal. Here can be seen to this day the ruins of a pirate fortress which was used by Henry Morgan along with many other notorious pirates who roamed the shores of the Island.

It is a fact that near these ruins Mitchell Hedges discovered four chests filled to the brim with gold bullion, which were reaped from the Spanish by the pirates of Roatan. As the story goes, Mitchell Hedges' friend, known as Doctor Ball, was walking around one of the nearby keys near old Port Royal with a compass in hand. Suddenly the compass started going mad, with the needle spinning around in all different directions. He signalled for Mitchell Hedges who at the time was out in his boat the Amigo just offshore. He told him about the compass's behaviour and the two of them decided that the only thing that would make the compass behave in such a way was a large amount of metal buried under the surface of the key. The two men wasted no time and started digging like mad; within minutes the two explorers had unearthed two large wooden chests loaded to the brim with golden doubloons.

They kept digging after their discovery in a fever of excitement and much to their surprise discovered two more treasure chests of equal size. They placed the chests back in the ground for later recovery and searched the rest of the island with the compass. They found nothing.

Several hours later after making the discovery word came to Mitchell Hedges from one of his crew of excavators that his discovery had been reported to the police in Coxen Hole by one of the locals, who must have witnessed them digging up the key.

The crew member also informed Mitchell Hedges that according to the rumours the police were going to investigate the dig site tomorrow morning. With these rumours in mind Mitchell Hedges, his daughter Sammy Hedges and Doctor Ball decided that it would be best not take any chances. So wasting no time the three explorers recovered three of the four chests that night and loaded them onto the Amigo and quickly set sail across swelling seas to the town of Belize which was then the capital of British Honduras.

Mitchell Hedges anchored the Amigo 150 miles off the coast of a small key and headed into the mainland on the Amigos extra boat. He returned several hours later with some lumber from which the expedition made three new chests for their treasure and dumped the old crusty ones into the sea. They then headed back inland and booked passage on a steamer that was headed for New York, their treasure safely stored in the cargo hold of the ship with the label Maya artifacts across the sides.

When the three explorers arrived in New York Mitchell Hedges sold off his lost treasure for the sum of $6,000,000 US. He then headed back to England where he bought himself a castle in the English countryside. Here he began work on his biography, Danger My Ally. In his book there is no mention of this incident...............

Where are the best reefs in Mesoamerica?

Healthy Reefs have released their Mesoamerica Reef 2015 Report Card. And we are excited to hear that Honduras was the highest ranked from the four countries of the Mesoamerica Reef, Honduras has ranked 3.3 on a scale of 5, giving Honduras the best rated areas of reef in the region. This is amazing news and proof that protection of the reef does work and even with approx 1 million cruiseship visitors and growing tourism numbers Honduras is able to maintain the best areas of reef in the region. This adds to the ever growing list of reasons why you should visit Roatan now – To find out more about visiting Roatan visit Roatanet.com.

We are pleased to announce that our new 2015 Report Card is now available!
The 2015 Report Card for the Mesoamerican Reef is based on a new study of 248 coral reef sites along 1000 km of the Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, which were monitored for living coral cover, fleshy macroalgal cover, herbivorous fish biomass (parrots and surgeonfish) and commercially important fish biomass (snappers and groupers).
Reviews and Comments on our 2015 Report Card:
“Given the growing scientific concern about coral reefs and the general decline in fish stocks globally – our measureable improvement in the condition of the Mesoamerican Reef, particularly fish populations, is encouraging”, says Dr. Melanie McField, Director of the Healthy Reefs Initiative / Smithsonian Institution.
“The exciting news that Guatemala has recently joined Belize and the Bay Islands of Honduras in banning the fishing of parrotfish is another critical step for the long-term conservation and recovery of corals on Mesoamerican reefs. Protecting herbivores of all kinds is critical to this endeavor. Congratulations to the Healthy Reefs Initiative for helping to promote this impressive effort, which I encourage other countries in the Caribbean to follow.” says Dr. Jeremy Jackson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Smithsonian Institution.
“You must be doing something right, because here, there are plenty of reasons for hope. Cordelia Banks, off Roatán, Honduras, is one of the best places I have seen, even counting 50 years ago, an amazing stand with acres of staghorn coral.” stated Dr. Sylvia Earle, founder of Mission Blue.
“The science is clear that protecting parrotfish can help corals grow and maintain the high-quality reef habitat needed to support productive fisheries for the future. The Mesoamerican Reef has the potential to become the world’s first international ecoregion to protect parrotfish in all of its reef area.” says Professor Peter Mumby of the University of Queensland.
