nomaddict's co-founder Tomek Basinski has recently built another of his Vannado camper van masterpieces.

Some of us would certainly ask at some point whether a construction of a camper van with a diesel engine can be anyhow ecological?

We can certainly limit our negative impact to a minimum. We can also use materials that are healthier and dust-free, just by making the best possible choices. Not to mention that living on such a small surface itself, limits energy, gas and water usage significantly. You become conscious of how little you actually need.

For the construction of Vannado camper vans, we use at least 5 different materials, depending on the part of the van we insulate. However, our favorite is the sheep's wool 🙂 - Pleasant to touch, very warm, silences the interior and works even at high humidity. Moreover, it is easily laid so that no thermal bridges and condensation spots are formed. We source it from Austria for each of our construction. It is a pity that after the construction we have no contact with it 😉, but we know that it watches over the warmth and the right climate even at -20'C outside. We will be touching on how we build winter vans in the future posts.

We have never been so connected as a world, and we have never been more isolated than most of us are right now. We will get back to traveling, but when we do, we have to do it right.

"Above all, we as travelers — and especially those of us blessed with the extra income and leisure time to be tourists — have to make better decisions. We must ask, “Who/What/Which resource am I exploiting?

How can I make sure my adventure benefits the individuals, communities, cultures, and natural spaces I encounter? How can I support small and medium social enterprises? How can I help empower women around the world? How can I help protect the wildest bits of our planet and make sure they survive this century?”"

https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/coronavirus-will-change-how-we-travel-will-probably-be-good-ncna1186681

The virus should force us to rethink an industry that was hurting local communities, wildlife and our world heritage — as well as disappointing tourists.

How can we be sustainable post-COVID19?

With a ban on non-essential travel and some countries in complete lockdown, we’re able to witness what happens to the Earth when we’re largely absent for the first time.

What will our holidays look like in the future?

''We’re going to travel less, but we will travel better.

As we emerge from this torpor, we’ll be craving health-enhancing experiences, restorative immersions in nature, spirit-lifting exercise in the open air and safe escapes for quality time with our nearest and dearest.

[...]

I’m also confident we’ll emerge from this more conscious, conscientious and sensitive to the health of people and planet, and we’ll be ready to help the world heal.''

WHEN THE SAFE TIMES COME for us (which is yet to be announced) to be outside again enjoying Great Outdoors (please check at the UN World Tourism Organisation for updates), be ready with a handful of ideas on how to travel locally and into nature over shorter period of time, yet with loads of excitement BUT limited preparation, gear, and marginal cost involved.

The term was made up by British adventurer Alastair Humphreys and is defined as an overnight outdoor adventure that is "small and achievable, for normal people with real lives".

The Adventure Travel Trade Association has mentioned 'microadventures' as one of the most prominent trends in the outdoor travel sector in its 2019 Industry Snapshot.

Some ideas may be found on the Alastair's website here: https://alastairhumphreys.com

PLEASE, take this as an inspiration to plan your adventurous time when the self-isolation and social physical distancing is over.

Staying indoors may also turn out to be another sort of an adventure, a very challenging for many of us :) Take the challenge, and think about the others, who may be at higher risk.

Thank you, and stay safe my Dear Nomaddicts

Responsible travel movement will define the 2020s with no doubt!

But do we know what is actually means, and how can we contribute while going on long-awaited holiday?

A good piece by Justin Francis, a co-founder of Responsible Travel.

Responsible travel has worked its way into popular consciousness, so what can we expect when the sector faces greater scrutiny on its contribution to climate concerns?

Go domestic, be more sustainable and learn to unplug - are our travel resolutions for 2020.

What are yours?

“The biggest misconception about sustainable travel is that it’s more expensive,” says Mac Gaughan, owner of Australian ethical travel company Clean Travel. “Travel should strengthen the community around it, and by buying local produce, staying in hotels owned by locals and travelling with local organisations, you are cutting out the international middle-men.

Avoiding flying is often not an option but, where possible, take a train and travel with the mantra of "leave no trace". In a nutshell, it’s really about being a responsible traveller.”

We believe (after The Transformational Travel Council that we are proud to be a part of) that WHY and HOW we travel is essential.

However WHERE we opt to go may also have some long-lasting consequences.

Why not going somewhere, where we can not only relax and savour the place, but also help a destination get better in times of turbulences of different sort?

Nepal, Argentina and Namibia would be our choices. Yours?
