TRAVELLING THROUGH THE TROPICAL RAINFOREST
17 January to 6 February

WHAT: A 9-metre-high 6-piece installation and the centerpiece of this year's edition of the annual Light to Night Festival.

As part of the Festival’s theme Do You See Me? the sculptor magnifies the minutiae of natural forms in a counterpoint to the geometric colonial edifice of the National Gallery Singapore. It is a super scale magnification of what would otherwise go unnoticed, possibly like walking through a forest and - in response to nature’s invitation to be seen - you notice details, such as fungus on the ground, a piece or shape of a leaf or a flower.

Inspired by the shape of palms, the installation at night is mesmerising in sheets of blue, red and violet light.

Suitable for all ages.

WIZARD OF OZ
Till 21 December

WHAT: If there’s one place in Singapore where freaky things can happen, it’s Yishun. That’s how Dorothy finds herself swept up by a cyclone one day and transported to the magical land of Oz, where the Munchkins live the high life in the East and the Winkies toil and labour in the West under the tyrannical rule of the Wicked Witch.

To find her way back, Dorothy needs an audience with the mysterious Wizard of Oz. Along the way, she gets help from a Hokkien-speaking Scarecrow, a Tin Man with a big axe and even bigger vocabulary, and a sensitive, crochet-loving Lion. What dangers lie ahead in this strange world that sometimes reminds Dorothy so much of Singapore? Will brains, heart and courage be enough to get her home?

A visionary reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s beloved children’s book, a story full of heart, humour and home truths.

A REASON FOR FALLING
7 & 8 December

WHAT: An exploration of the possibilities existing between a loss of balance and meeting the ground - what happens when we let go of control, give in to gravity, and embrace the experience of a fall, inspired by freeriding, the practice of riding down uncurated mountain faces on bikes, snowboards or skis.

It is one dancer's way of translating these practices from vast, open terrains onto the flat, safe space of the dance floor, and to pursue possibility, wonder, and joy.

Presented as part of da:ns focus – Out of Site, a weekend of programmes where extreme sports and dance meet.

02/12/2024

CORPS extrêmes
6 & 7 December

WHAT: A meditation on risk, vertigo and fear through dance, where the stage appears to be a cloud. Breathtaking levels of acrobatic and athletic virtuosity gently give way to a luminous sensitivity and humbling vulnerability as ten performers meet between earth and sky.

Created with two extreme sports athletes - the French highline world record holder Nathan Paulin, and Swiss climbing champion Nina Caprez - alongside eight acrobats, these unlikely collaborators flirt with gravity, traversing a magnificent climbing wall built on stage. Somewhere between documentary and dream, simultaneously intimate and larger than life, Corps extrêmes sheds new light on what it means to stand on the edge of a precipice, literally and figuratively.

Named one of the Best Dance Performances of 2023 by The New York Times. Part of da:ns focus – Out of Site, a weekend of programs that invites you to the terrain where extreme sports and dance meet.
