Hey everyone - I wanted to alert you to a really cool opportunity happening this Saturday 5/25: Dorian Anderson, who did a continent-wide bicycling big year in 2014, is coming to Minneapolis to give talk about that experience! He recently published a book about it, Birding Under the Influence, where he chronicles the big year as well as his recovery from addiction, and how those two projects intertwined.

The talk is at 2pm on Saturday. I will be there and I'm very excited to have a chance to hear his talk. As some of you know, I did a biking big year in 2019 in Minnesota and Dorian's efforts were a huge inspiration to me.

The talk is part of the ABA Community Weekend that is happening this weekend in the Twin Cities!

Vacationing in Florida gives you a chance at some very fun birds. Here are a couple of American Flamingos from a group of about 12 near Fort Myers that we took a boat trip out to see. These flamingos have been hanging around there for a few months (since Hurricane Idalia). I was excited to get a chance to see these birds in the US and I hope they stick around for a long time!

Canada Jays are about the cutest thing in the boreal forest! The sun finally came out on Sunday which made for some great photography conditions for these birds.

A little bit of history behind Birding with Gregg

My partner, Kellie, was the one who got me into birds. I had always been outdoorsy, but she showed me the wonders of birds! Once I was hooked, my interest just grew and grew and I spent more and more time and energy into looking for birds. After my skills grew and I got into the community of birders, I started leading bird walks for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Those spring walks helped me realize that sharing birds with other people really increased my own enjoyment of the birds. In 2018, I got the chance to guide for the Sax-Zim Bog Winter Birding Festival and I knew that I had found what I truly wanted to do. The excitement level at that festival was amazing - sharing the experience of seeing wonderful and hard-to-see birds with other birders had me feeling a high for weeks afterward! I’d love to help share that feeling by guiding you in Minnesota and beyond!

Kellie and I have always loved to travel. As birding has become a bigger part of our lives, it was only natural that birding would become a bigger part of our travel plans as well! In December 2016 and January 2017, we went to Australia, with brief stops in New Zealand and Beijing in transit. It was an amazing experience, and the wonderful birds were a big part of that trip. Since such a long trip in quite expensive, I got big into travel hacking. We used airline miles, credit card points, and hotel points to save over $6000 on that trip. We paid for all of our airfare to and from Australia, plus multiple in-country flights just using miles and points earned from credit cards. Now we rarely take a trip that we haven’t funded at least in part through my miles and points hobby.

I really like researching (I had a job for four years helping attorney’s conduct legal research, and I am still employed at a legal publisher) and planning, so it makes sense that our travel and birding is well planned and researched. I know that others don’t always share my taste for searching out information online, so I believe that I can help other birders concoct travel plans, either trips primarily for birding or as add-ons to existing, non-bird-focused travel.

In short, I love birding and I love to share birds with people!
