The earlier in the day you book your flight, the better your chance is of your flight departing on time. The later in the day, your chances of delays or cancelations increase substantially.

Additionally, when at all possible, book direct flights, even if they cost more. There are many moving parts with connecting flights, and there is every chance that your connecting flight could be delayed or canceled. It just causes undo stress.
