TESTED: Smith & Wesson Inc. M&P9 Metal M2.0 Spec

The handgun features an olive drab green Cerakote finish. The grip treatment is more like the 10mm M&P than the 9mm, with a balance of adhesion and abrasion favoring abrasion. Don’t worry about corrosion. The slide is stainless steel under Cerakote. The pistol features lightening cuts in the slide to lower weight.

The most prominent feature of the pistol is a compensator. This 4.8-inch barrel features a 1:10-inch rifling twist. The pistol will accept six different optic cuts, with the CORE system making it more versatile than most. The M&P9 Spec trigger is superior to practically any striker-fired pistol I have tested. The flat face of the trigger and a sear specially developed for the Spec pistol add up to a smooth trigger action. Take-up is modest and the trigger breaks sharply at 4.0 pounds.

FIRST TEST: SIG SAUER P365-FUSE 9mm

The pistol retains the slender width of the P365 while serving up a longer grip that accommodates a 21-round capacity magazine and a longer barrel/slide configuration for an increased sight radius and enhanced accuracy potential.

The P365-FUSE is all about delivering ample firepower in an easy-to-carry and concealable package.

Of course, many factors play into accuracy potential — close tolerances and precision construction of moving assemblies, good engineering, and a good barrel. The P365-FUSE (shown left) measures 4.3 inches. It is made of carbon steel with a DLC finish and is just over half an inch longer than the P365 XL Spectre barrel at right. A half-inch may not sound like much, but in a pistol, that can have a big influence on accuracy.

TESTED: TH45 Review

With the TH45 fire control, the up position places the pistol in a full safe mode. This allows the pistol to be locked, cocked, and ready to rock. When you’re ready to fire, you simply snap the safety to fire on your draw from concealment.

Pushing the safety down past the fire position safely de-cocks the hammer. The pistol is completely safe to carry in this position.

What makes this shine? Double stack magazines. Coming in at 13+1 rounds and +P rated moves this pistol into another level of carry protection. Six more rounds with the plus-one capacity dwarfs the 7+1 capacity of a standard 1911.

All controls are ambidextrous and allow southpaws to shoot it comfortably. A stainless steel 4.25-inch barrel offers good accuracy and longevity. Ample stippling in the grip helps with control during recoil. The gun comes standard with a white dot front sight and a Novak adjustable rear sight. Overall length is 7.80 inches, and the unloaded weight is 28.50 oz.

FIELD TEST: M2 Field

The semi-automatic M2 Field, operated by Benelli’s Inertia Driven System, is composite stocked and offered in 12- and 20-gauge chambers for both 2 3/4- and 3-inch shells. 24-, 26-, and 28-inch barrels for each.

Out of the box, the M2 pointed high when quickly shouldered. I did change shims to adjust the drop. This shotgun was then fired using a mix of Wi******er, Federal, and Fiocchi 2 3/4-inch target and game loads. As advertised, the M2 cycled all loads — with no gas system to clean at the end of the day. Being in the middle of our Pennsylvania turkey hunting season, I then placed a Fastfire 4 on the vent rib, inserted a JEBS .560-inch Headhunter choke, and patterned with Golden Turkey TSS. This combination printed 175-215 pellets in the 10-inch circle at 40 yards.

TESTED: InfiRay AFFO AP09 Thermal Monocular

Thermal imaging, you see, is a 24-hour asset. It works as effectively during the day as it does at night. That’s because the thermal optic system utilizes extremely sensitive thermal sensors and sophisticated image processing technology — even AI programming, as is the case with the InfiRay AFFO AP09 system tested here — to pick up the slightest variations in heat signatures to construct imaging that you can observe in real time, record as video, or capture as stills.

the AP09 proved downright simple to operate. Four buttons are located along the top of the housing. At front is the power button, which turns the unit on and off. Once on, a quick press will send the unit into sleep mode, allowing you to preserve the battery while providing instant reactivation when you need it.

Additionally, there are two directional and one menu button. Quick-pressing the up button lets you scroll between the five color palettes: white hot, black hot, red hot, color, and highlight. A quick press of the down button snaps a still image while a long press begins and ends the video recording. All recorded data lodges in the unit’s internal 8 GB storage.

The menu button serves two functions. Quick-pressing allows you to change between 1X, 2X, and 4X magnification. Long-pressing the button accesses the system’s menu. Here, you can customize several features, including Wi-Fi connectivity, picture-in-picture (PIP), brightness, calibration, date and time, language, and factory reset.

The Predator 4S 4-16x44mm is a testament to Steiner’s commitment to superb optical clarity. It felt light in the hand, and it should — weighing in at a mere 18 ounces. I also appreciate the 10.9-inch length that doesn’t compromise the magnification range. According to data from Steiner, this 4-16x hunting riflescope is 25 percent shorter than other riflescopes in its class without sacrificing clarity.

The Predator 4S 4-16×44 mm is meticulously designed for precision. The screw-down aluminum turret caps cover the windage and elevation dials. Both dials feature a 1 click = 1/4 MOA adjustment.

Trijicon, Inc. just jumped to the top of the class with its new higher-magnification LPVO

Until recently, LPVOs (low power variable optics) were basically downsized riflescopes that typically had low magnification, small objective lenses and reticles designed primarily for fast target engagement versus long-range precision. They offered somewhat limited utility and topped out at 6x or 8x magnification. That’s changing with newer LPVOs offering significant enhancements in magnification, reticles, illumination, turrets, and versatility.

C**t Competition 1911 .45 ACP

The C**t Competition is a go anywhere, do anything handgun that is among my favorite 1911 handguns of all time. The C**t Competition 1911 also features a dual-spring recoil system while retaining the original recoil guide — there is no full-length guide rod. This arrangement seems to harness recoil well.

The trigger is an aluminum match type. The trigger action is sharp and smooth, breaking at just under six pounds (as measured on the RCBS registering trigger scale). Reset is important to speed shooting, and this trigger resets sharply. I cannot hear as well as I did but I heard the audible reset.

FIRST TEST: New(ish) Folding Tactical Mini-14

Readers of a certain age will instantly recognize a folding Mini-14 as the gun immortalized in the cheesy 1980s hit TV show The A-Team, which featured high-volume gunfire, few casualties, and the catchphrase, “I love it when a plan comes together.”

A plan has definitely come together with Ruger’s new version of the folding-stock Mini-14.
