We're venturing up to the far northwest of Ireland. Up here in County Donegal, you'll find one of the most starkly beautiful lighthouses in the world. Since 1817, Fanad Lighthouse has been guiding ships past the headlands of the Lough Swilly area and it's remote, windswept location ensures that there remains an understandable fascination with Fanad - as with many of the picturesque lighthouses dotted around the Irish coast. When Galley Head Lighthouse was built in 1875, it was the most powerful lighthouse light in the world. While this may no longer be the case, it is certainly a powerful destination – with dramatic cliffs, dolphins and whales appearing in the waters below and cosy lightkeepers' houses in which you can spend the night, this is big contender for the bucket list!

The ancient Royal Burgh of Inveraray is located 60 miles northwest of Glasgow by Loch Fyne in an area of spectacular natural beauty. The ruggedness of the highland scenery serves as a spectacular backdrop for the sheltered tidal Loch, beside which nestles the present Castle built between 1745 and 1790.
