Thoroughly enjoyed telling this story for and team .

Alessandra was such a sport, braving the not so warm waters of Richmond, CA😂

On a personal note, I’m forever grateful for a thought that I had long ago when I was still introducing myself to the industry:

“Forget the tools and just tell a really good story, every single time”.

It sounds elementary but so much needs to happen in order to tell a really good story, much of which requires soft skills rather than the obvious material necessities required to pull of a good picture. There lies the main difference, as a good picture seldom guarantees a great story.

Understanding your subject in detail requires mountains of empathy in order to “see” them; to see and feel another’s essence.

Once the essence of the individual is captured the next task is to translate that essence in a way that enables many others to connect - insert more mountains of empathy here.

Creatives - if you want to make something beautiful, then SEE people beautifully.

PS - when you get to the party, tell your ego to wait outside.

3 tips for great storytelling:

1. Bring all of your empathy - get rid of the “I” and employ more of a “we” mentality. If you’re hired to tell a story, then it’s obvious you know what you’re doing and you’re good at your craft, be it cinematography, lighting or sound design. Stop boring the client with tech talk and start making a valiant effort to get to actually know them and understand what is most important to THEM; take a holistic approach. If you can’t see them, the audience won’t either.

2. No one cares about the gear - there is no camera or sound recorder that will save a botched or undercooked story. If you can’t craft a great story with an iPhone/Android then that RED or Sony Venice won’t help.

3. Pacing is everything! - this point can actually be tied back to the first point of empathy. What does the story FEEL like? How does it flow? How is it presented? I have found that cooking for someone is the closest activity that resembles storytelling because you have to seriously consider how someone else will receive the meal. There is a huge difference between cooking to not make a mistake for self preservation of one’s image and cooking to genuinely give someone an indelible experience.

I'm often asked to suggest the best tools for different tasks in production for digital storytelling and the truth is, the tool doesn't matter without a solution-based mindset and a heart full of empathy.

What good are all the tools you've dreamed of using when the ability to connect to the desired audience is amiss?

Of all the digital settings and plug-ins we check before the camera rolls, the most important setting to check is the analog connection to the audience.

How is your connection?

Do you have a big audience or do you have a tribe?
