Nesting season kick off! Today it rained in the dry south pacific coast of Costa Rica, this scattered showers in middle of the beginning of the dry season just mean one thing for the Tropical Royal Flycatcher: Build the nest, and do it fast because now food is still abundant and nesting material is easy to find. But for the bird photographer it means is the best time to take photos of this bird opening its crown as part of their pair bonding display they perform when building the nest. Concerns about the impact for the bird? Good! well if you don’t playback and don’t touch the nest or its nearest branches it will be alright. Actually this nest was right over a relatively busy road near Dominical. In the 45min our current group spent there today at least 10 cars went right below it. Still concerned? On custom-target trips our mission is to simply spoil our clients while looking for their birds at their own pase. Our current target trip had the inconspicuous Tawny-crested Tanager listed as #2 most wanted bird from a list of less than 10 birds. We closed the recent “owl tour” with basically all species of owls available in Costa Rica: 14 species and as the client requested almost all in daylight. This Bare-shanked Screech-Owl was a hard one for “day-time check” and required a long detour, a not-so-comfortable night of sleep and a lot of local knowledge (thanks Luis Barrantes!).

Amazon is truly a special place. As we are about to start that awesome time of the year where our groups visit the Ecuadorian Amazon we will like to highlight one species that always stands out as its genus preceded its reputation: the Amazonian Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus ornatus). Despite being the easiest of the three umbrellabirds it is still an awesome umbrellabird with two main features: first a white iris and second extendable white shafts right above its forehead. Pretty cool ha? Always a highlight and an expected bird for our lucky groups that will be soon visiting the amazon rainforest of Ecuador.

What a great time to photograph Resplendent Quetzals in Costa Rica right now! From in-flight nesting photo sessions to foraging at really close distance (like the one in the photo taken in our current photo tour). A total of 6 different individuals were taken in really mouth-watering portraits at three different locations.
