Pisa, “leaning” towards the sea , did you know it ?
The “leaning tower” is one of the quintessential symbols of Italy, but did you know how much else Pisa has to offer ? A scenic Arno riverside lined with Renaissance mansions, the medieval gem of “San Piero a Grado” church built where St. Peter arrived from the Holy Land, a pleasant “Marina” seaside for an authentic seafood lunch & dolphins spotting, and of course, the unique “Miracles’ Square” with the iconic dome, baptistery and tower. With plenty of newly built cycling paths and hiking trails (like the walk to magnificent Lucca along the renaissance Medici aqueduct), so many reasons to discover this historic “Maritime Republic “!

“A day on the beach” in Puglia easily turns into a mini-adventure with a visit to Ostuni “white City”, “pasticciotti” pastries and all sorts of cold coffee creations, grabbing a tank of rose’ wine from Manduria consortium winery (with a wine tasting of Primitivo since we are there …), and a gourmet dinner in my beloved Monopoli . Oh, I almost forgot the beach , meaning the Caribbean-blue paradise of the ionic coast ! History has been fair with Italy. Across the centuries, every city had the chance to become the lighthouse of civilization along the centuries. Take Urbino for example. A Unesco heritage site, birthplace of Raffaello (Sanzio) and cradle of Renaissance, whose spectacular achievements are showcased in the gorgeous Ducal Palace, in particular the concept of the Ideal City, seminal in modern architecture. Packed with artworks by Piero della Francesca (basically, the inventor of perspective), Tiziano (Vecelli) and other masters, so famous that nobody bothers to learn their surname, like Leonardo , Michelangelo .... As seat of one of the oldest universities in the world (the first being Bologna), this vertical medieval wonder grants a very lively aperitivo and wine scene. Because yes, and I know I am boring, it sits amidst a spectacular wine region. Time to enjoy delicious "crescita", a kind of "piadina meets chapati" bread with local herbs & sausage.

Cinque Terre are listed as UNESCO world heritage not because of its undoubted colorful cuteness , but thanks to the unique ancient system of terraces which allows the cultivation of grapes and olives on impossibly steep slopes . The few local winemakers deserve the appellation of “heroic” , making very pleasant white DOC with Vermentino, Bosco & Albarola varieties , the famous sweet Sciacchetra’ and some reds which need some stoic heroism to be swallowed. An ideal pairing with typical local delicacies like “cappun magru”, once a poor sailors’ leftovers patchwork and nowadays a potential gourmet blast : a multi -layered fish & vegetable composition kept together with a tasty parsley & garlic sauce , topped with prawns , marinated anchovies and steamed mussels . Best to hike some more from Manarola to Corniglia to burn the caloric heroism !

The most beautiful, sun drenched, lavishly decorated corner room of the Royal hunting lodge of “La Mandria” is not dedicated to the Queen but to countess Rosa Vercellana, the “official” lover of Vittorio Emanuele Ii, the first king of Italy. The elegant, vast estate nested in a lush forest and meadows park is a gem within the necklace of Unesco listed residences of Savoia family, centered in Turin. The voluptuous countess, known locally as “la bela Rosin”, was particularly fond of Vittorio’s outstanding facial hair, which even inspired the delightful local “Krumiri” cookies, originally a curved Jewish sweet. Queen Margherita, a fragile, reserved and inappetent lady, has anyway a place in history : during the official royal visit to Naples, the local pizza makers baked a specially rich recipe to lure her and symbolize the green, red and white of the new Italian flag . Guess what came out :-)

You ask a thousand Italian pizzaioli (pizza makers) how to make the perfect pizza , and you get a thousand different recipes. Type of flour and mix , add or not olive oil , the special water of Napoli , which yeasts and how kind to let it leaven (at least overnight is the minimum ), the wood used to fire the oven (they will all agree electric oven is criminal), the use of “lievito madre” (the leavened dough used by the same pizzeria since decades , adding only flour every day and making it incredibly digestible ), and of course the endless variations about tomato types , mozzarella and the ingredients ....

From the Alps to the Adriatic Sea cycling adventure - part 2/3
Grado is the prize for the bikers crossing the Alps towards the Adriatic along the wonderful “Alpe Adria” cycling path: scenic lagoons and canals (the “Veneti” indigenous population built it as prototype for Venice), tasty “boreto” fish stew and “santonego” seaweed distillate (an acquired taste I would say), popular beaches and above all , the proximity to splendid Aquileia . The former capital of he Roman Empire , a UNESCO heritage site with the biggest and oldest mosaics of Christianity. Oh, and don’t forget Udine, lively and elegant hidden gem of Friuli . In the next episode, one last jump to Venice ! Tagliamento River in the northern Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is the last of the “wild rivers” in Europe, running free in a completely natural riverbed with scenic blue swimming pools, carving its way through the mighty Julian Alps . The “Alpe Adria” cycling path, a masterpiece of reinventing an abandoned alpine railway into a wonderful outdoor attraction , offers the ideal way to discover the lovely medieval villages along the way like Venzone and Gemona .

22/03/2021

The seaside town of Santa Teresa di Gallura in northern Sardinia is beloved for the relaxed, authentic vibe and the turquoise & lapis lazuli waters of secluded coves. However, active and curious visitors would hike to the scenic lighthouse admiring the alien-like rocky formations, spotting the rough coastline of nearby Corsica and looking for the poorly marked Roman Quarry from where the columns of Pantheon and Pisa Baptistry were carved. A refreshing swim, a Mojirto Mirto (the tasty local myrtle berries distillate) cocktail on the main square, ultra-fresh prawns & squid “paranza” straight out of the fisherman’s boat and the dream holiday is served !

Hospitality, Humour & Healthy lifestyle are the magic H’s of Central Sardinia, a rural mountainous area flagged as “Blue Zone” thanks to the exuberant percentage of ultracentenarians and overall active longevity. Even the splendid, colorful traditional costumes are made of the unique silk of Orgosolo and lasts for over a century, true artworks.
The local gastronomy in the charming village of Aritzo is particularly rich with homey giant hams, knife-cut “guanciale” and “coppa” served on warm “carasau” bread (a magic ritual mastered by signora Vittoria with our friends of Your Sardinia Exoerience) with endless variations of “pecorino” cheese, hand-made “gnocchetti” with rich sausage sauce and “carapigna” sorbet created with just a wooden & metal bucket. A demanding, rewarding hike to Tiscali bronze-age settlement in a gigantic karst sinkhole and a refreshment in the crystal-clear spring of Su Gologone river and the recipe for eternal youth is written :-)

We all love cheese in its infinite variations, but who knows how it is created? The ancient rituals of turning fresh milk into heavenly burrata and mozzarella, robust aged cacio and velvety ricotta (oh, the fresh cannoli ....) is a blend of art, alchemy and science. The lush greenery and flowery meadows of Palazzolo Acreide is such a surprise after the cobalt and turquoise waters of nearby Siracusa!
