As we wind up another successful season at Joe's we hope everyone made it home safely.
A huge thank you to all the people that came to Joe's this year for a memorable experience. Nice to see lots of returning people and the new faces also.
You will be glad to know our staff has been dismantling Joe's and that it is under tow back to Vancouver, by our good friends at Thunder Bay Tugs, where she sits until spring. The lodge has a wooden hull and the saltwater parasites eat away at the hull in salt water and the only way to kill them is to park it in freshwater, so we park her in the Fraser River. Parking in fresh water is the same issue, with freshwater parasites and the only way to dispose of them is in salt water. Dismantling the lodge is like a huge lego project.!!! We will be assembling our "Lego" project in the spring, so we are open for mid June 2025.
When you are going through your Joe's pictures from 2024 and have any we could put on our website, please send them to myself. Our website will be getting a new face lift so stay tuned.
The fish this year were plentiful for the most part to say the least. The Coho's showed up early and stayed later than usual and the springs were ever allusive. Efforts to find their hiding areas always proved to be a challenge, but many anglers were up for it.
This year's charity fundraising derby for the BC Children's Hospital raised $127,500.00, which to date puts us within easy reach of one million dollars for next year's derby. A huge thank you to all the participants at our annual derby and of course to the people who have trouble keeping their hands down...at auction time. You have made some BC Children's Hospital kids' dreams become a reality!!! You all have made a huge difference.
We now have a big issue to contend with. That being the "new" way that a salmon has to be filleted. You must have noticed half the salmon was cut into portion size, while the other half remained as a full fillet, with tail on and a cut half way, without cutting through the skin. The reasoning behind this is for DFO to be able to identify the full salmon at a glance. Although it would only take one moment to put together the pieces of the portion size fish which is in a separate bag, When I cook up the 1/2 fillet of fish, I had better invite lots of friends over. We have complained on your behalf but it has fallen on deaf ears. We ask that everyone write a short note to fisheries and complain about this new regulation that became law August 4. Here is a link to send your complaint to: fishing-peche@dfo-mpo-gc-ca .
And for that leftover salmon, Grace has a great recipe:
2 cups cooked salmon mixed with one egg, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, garlic powder, paprika. Add 1/2 - 3/4 cup any pancake mix. Mix and form small patties to fry in oil and butter. Flip when golden and flip over once (5-7 minutes). Serve with a dollop of zesty mayo. Zesty mayo is a mixture of lemon juice, mayo, a pinch of salt and lemon zest.
For all those returning guests and groups for 2025. Your spot from this year is your spot for next year. You can trade up or trade down your spot, it's your call. Just get a hold of us to firm those dates of your choice for next year.
