🥾❤️🌲 Happy 13th Trailversary week to meeeee!!! (And to my pops & hiking partner extraordinaire, LongTime!)

Especially grateful for all the friendships that arose along that 2,000-mile trek toward Katahdin — I’m pretty sure life would be a whole lot more boring if we never met out there. 🥰

Where to next?

❄️ Had a blast with this cool crew up in Peekskill last Saturday! We kicked off the 2024 GGH hiking season with this fun 5-miler at Blue Mountain Reservation.

🎉 We welcomed in a few new faces to the fold, and welcomed back guest hiker, my mom! It was a few of of the hikers first foray onto snow-covered trails, and I can tell they liked it, cuz next month’s Public Transit Series is filling up fast!

☀️ To top it all off, the sun cooperated when we got to the summit, revealing views of Bear Mountain across the river!

🙏 Thanks to everyone for taking the trek to go hiking! Getting out and about in the winter is such a boost to my soul.

🎙🙏Thanks so much to Anna (aka Mudd Butt) for having me as a guest on this week’s episode of The Trail Dames Podcast!

🥾It was a true pleasure talking with her about how I got my start backpacking, my love for being out in nature, and about all the awesome feels I get as a guide when I help a hiker reach a goal!

❤️We also chatted a bunch about how beneficial my solo time out on the Colorado Trail this past Summer was to my soul.

Can’t wait to hit the trails with Anna and her Trail Dames in IRL one day!!

🤩Fall Foliage was the star on Sunday’s Further Afield hike to Minnewaska! I’m soooo glad the rain stopped on Saturday so this small but mighty crew could get out and enjoy the scenery!

On our walk out to Gertrude’s Nose, we were treated to many a fine sight — hawks and turkey vultures floating along in flight, long views out to the valley below, big boulders balancing on cliff edges, and sheer lakeside cliffs shining in the sunlight!

🧡Thanks a ton to Julie and Gillian for giving me a good reason to get outside! It always feels like coming home when I hit the trails at Minnewaska, and to get to share that space with others warms my heart even more.

C’est fini! 486 miles in 31 days from Denver to Durango, wahoo!!

The weather over my last 4 days on trail was a mix, (as it has been this whole trip), but thankfully just one last hail storm, lol!

Had some gorgeous sunrises, enjoyed clear and beautiful views over Indian Ridge, reunited with friends made earlier on trail, and still kept meeting new and awesome other hikers!

I came out here to test my mettle and dang, Colorado Trail, you really did a number on me! I only seriously thought of quitting you twice, but you sucked me back in with your beauty.

Congrats to all CT finishers and anyone who’s ever attempted a thru-hike of this thing!!

After 412 miles on the Colorado Trail, I rewarded myself with a full day off in Silverton, and wow did I need that!

I enjoyed all the best food and drink in town, met a bunch of nice locals got a care package from my trail bestie, and had a great time with the other hikers at The Avon hostel!

But before all of that - passed the highest point on the trail, crossed the 400 mile-mark & enjoyed sweet views above treeline (when it wasn’t raining) of the Weminuche Wilderness.

Just 74 more miles to Durango!!

Days 13-18 on Colorado Trail

Leadville to Twin Lakes to Mt Princeton Resort to Salida - past 1/2 way!!

It’s been ups and downs, highs and lows, hot sun and cold rain. Dang Colorado, what an identity crisis!

The CT has an east and a west route along the collegiate range, and though I’ve heard “west is best” it also comes with a lot of exposed ridges and a few more miles. With the recent weather and the fact I’m a bit behind my plan, I decided to go east. The reward? Hot springs!!

Starting off day 19 from Salida! Enjoyed some great food and brews here!

More miles / more smiles on the Colorado Trail! (Along with the daily dose of “How will Colorado kill me next?”) 😅 photos include: finally hitting the high passes, old arsenals, lush valleys, getting Starbucks at ski resorts, rainbows above treeline, snow?! what?!, people bike this?!?!, almost at the top, waterfalls, and Melanzana!

Colorado Trail days 4-8! Made it to the 100-mile mark (103.7 to Breckenridge to be precise)! Its been a few days if beautiful views above 10,000 feet, meeting other awesome hikers and bike-packers, and also being super humbled by the weather. I’ve never experienced getting caught in a hail storm before this and dang, I’ve still got stuff to learn! Colorado, you’re hard!

Next stop, Leadville!

🎉Wahoo for 5 years of Girl Gotta Hike! And thanks to all who came up to Belleayre Beach last weekend to celebrate! The support I get from hikers past, present & future, family, and longtime friends is what really keeps this whole thing going! ❤️🥾🌲

What a day of grilling, swimming and hiker games!! Thanks to , I gave away two daypacks and two hats to the winners of the hiker relay!

Events included:
Sleeping pad roll up
Tent set up
Water carry sprint!

Can’t wait for the next 5!! And what a great send off for me to start a monthlong hike on The Colorado Trail. 🥰

💥Had a blast exploring the Dover Stone Church with these ladies last Saturday!

😎The temps were hot, but the cave, the company, and the post-hike ice cream, were cool as can be! It was a real treat to welcome so many Girl Gotta Hike first-timers to the trail too! T’was a lovely backdrop to close out the last Public Transit Series hike of the Summer season.

🙏🚆😬 Super grateful too that we just so happened to miss out on the rains that came just a day later!

🙏 Still feeling the joy from my time spent on trail with these two last Saturday in Minnewaska State Park! Especially glad now that we got out and about before all this wildfire smoke made it’s way to our region!

🌥 Some folks shy away from a day when the views are a bit blanketed in fog, but I like to think it’s more like a magnifying glass to the present moment!

🔎 Along our 11-miles, the three of us noticed all the little things — the mountain laurel blossoms just about to burst into bloom, the knotty and gnarled bark of the pitch pines, felt the rocky surface beneath our feet, heard songs from birds we couldn’t see — and had the trails nearly to ourselves!

Whatever the weather*, I always feel better when I get out and hike!

*Except on poor-air quality days due to wildfire smoke! Hiking in today’s conditions is not recommended. Staying inside and looking at photos from previous hikes is the much better option!

🇳🇵🏔️❤️ 5 years ago this week myself and five fellow NYC-based photographers trekked up to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, and dang was it epic!

☔️ Many thanks to this crew who braved the rain yesterday for a wetter than expected 4-mile loop at Bear Mountain State Park!

🌎 Girl Gotta Hike and TriState Hikers joined forced this Earth Day weekend to support the trails and give back by gathering trash. We bagged up everything from water bottles and empty cans, to chewing gum and candy wrappers, and even found a few pacifiers and a red lacy bra … ??

💪 But not only did these hikers donate their time and efforts on a less than perfect day, but they also donated their money! Together we gathered $375 for the New York New Jersey Trail Conference so that they can keep on keeping this highly frequented section of the Appalachian Trail in tip-top shape!

☀️ Thanks to all for the laughs and the smiles throughout a soaker of a Sunday. Looking forward to hitting this stretch of trail with everyone again on a sunny day!

🎙Today we’re talking all things thru-hiking on a super special Q&A episode featuring three New York City-based hikers, who are all aspiring to hike the Appalachian Trail this year!

🏕Escaping regular life to embark on a five-to-six-month journey by foot is no easy feat, and there’s no right or wrong way to prepare for it. To help set them up for success, I enlisted two of my most favorite thru-hikers and regular podcast guests, Kelley “NoSeeUm” Blosser and Lauren “Woodchuck” de la Vega to weigh in on the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

🍻No matter if you’re a newbie to the backpacking scene or a seasoned thru-hiker, this episode is sure to teach you something. Grab a brew, settle in for some trail talk, and laugh along with us!

🏔️So proud of our small but mighty crew who worked our way up the steep side of Rusk Mountain to snag another Catskills 3500 foot peak on Saturday!

☀️We were unexpectedly blessed on this one, both with sunny skies, and by some early-bird hikers who just happened to have already broken trail for us through the two-plus feet of freshly fallen snow. That sure made our bushwhacking of a trail-less peak soooo much easier!

🌷Great hike, awesome peeps, & a stop at my favorite local brewery - What a way to welcome in Spring!

🌦️Major high fives to this crew who didn’t let the threat of rain stop them from enjoying an outdoor adventure on The Old Croton Aqueduct last Saturday!

🪄Turns out the weather gods were kind and spared us from showers for nearly the whole 6-miles!

🌷The positivity these ladies possess
blossomed into a myriad of fun and interesting conversations on trail. Just thinking about the connections made out there has continued to bring me smiles throughout the week.

🙏Thanks to you all for reaffirming why I started this lil ol’ guide business to begin with. Can’t wait until the next one.

✅Hike straight up the side of Halcott Mountain? Sure, why not?! All in a day’s work for this crew!

🥾Bushwhack (trail-less) hikes are rarely easy, but this team rose to the challenge and topped this Catskill 3500 summit with miles of smiles! I’m smiling too, even though I forgot to lower my face covering (twice), lol!

🎉Major thanks to this awesome group for making the most out of a cold, (finally) snowy, and slippery day up in the Catskills last weekend!

🙏Can’t wait to do it all again with ya!

☝️Just 1 spot left for this Saturday’s Catskill 3500 Winter Bushwhack Hike!

🥾Head to the hills with GGH, where we’ll forgo the usual footpaths and head off trail to reach some sweet peaks! This month, we’re aiming for Halcott Mountain, one of the truly trailless bushwhacks, and its nearby and slightly smaller neighbor, Sleeping Lion.

❄️Winter is a great time to trek in the Catskills, not only because there are no leaves on the trees to obscure the views, but especially on these two, because we get to avoid slipping through the stinging nettles that smother their steep slopes in the Summer.

🍻After we meet the mountaintops, we’ll return by way of a waterfall, and can kick back and celebrate our success at the nearby West Kill Brewery!

🙌 Givin’ it up to Jasleen for making it to the top of Wittenberg on her 1st winter hike in the Catskills!

☺️Nothing warms my soul more than seeing a hiker’s smile of pure satisfaction and enjoyment in the environment around her!

❄️It was an honor to help her reach her goal of summiting a snow-covered mountain, and learning what works for her so she can head out with more confidence the next time around! She got to test out traction devices, experiment with what food and drink would satisfy in the cold, and which layers to wear to keep her warm.

📷All in all, an awesome day topped off with some spectacular views and fun conversations!

🍂 What’s better than being immersed in some fall foliage fabulousness in the Catskills?! How about hiking, camping and hanging with some new friends from !

Super proud of this group of NYC-based adventurists for taking on an overnight in the Windham-Blackhead Range last weekend! We topped three peaks, enjoyed sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, and collectively checked off a lot of firsts!

⛰1st time in the Catskills
🥇1st 3500 peak-summit
👯1st trip with Mappy Hour
🎒1st time backpacking
💦1st time filtering water from a stream…

The beauty of the Blackhead Range is hard to beat, but time on trail feels even more fun when swapping stories and sharing laughs with a crew like this!

👹 Wahoo and congrats to this crew for taking on the Western Half of The Devil’s Path last weekend! Not only did we triumph over that beastly terrain, but we tackled two side peaks too!

🍂We were awed with the autumn colors and the sweeping views along the way and we were blessed with the best leaf-peeping weather conditions that mama nature could provide!

🍻Our positive vibes kept us going most of the time, even over the steep scrambles, but the drive for delicious post-hike beers is what motivated many to make it to the finish!

07/10/2022

✌️Part Two of the Devil’s Path, coming at ya next weekend, just in time for some peak foliage, baby!

We’ll be winding our way up and across the Western half of the Catskill’s most famous trail, checking off three 3500-foot peaks along the way — Hunter, Southwest Hunter and West Kill!

All while being m immersed in the beauty of all things Catskills — rocky slopes, deep woods, fire towers, waterfalls, and did I mention that fabulous fall foliage?!

Best of all, we’ll celebrate our summit successes with some sweet brews and delicious food at the nearby on Sunday afternoon!

🚇 🚍 No car? No prob! This hike offers a part-public transit, part-carpool option, plus some carpools are in the works too.

🎒⛺️ No gear? No prob! Individual Ultralight Backpacking Kits available to rent.

☔️A rainy day won’t keep us at bay! I’m still smiling about my stroll with this crew up in Tarrytown last Saturday!

While the forecast was less than perfect, we were lucky enough to catch a mostly dry weather window during on our 8-ish mile hike along the Old Croton Aqueduct and in Rockefeller State Park, chatting and sharing stories along the way.

The far-reaching views may have been shrouded in fog, but that just meant we got to pay attention to the little things — the birds flitting in the field, the soft light on the sycamores, the solid stonework on the arched bridges of the old Rockefeller roads and some magnificent mushrooms too!

Getting up before dawn to head to trail is never an easy feat, especially when the drops are already falling and the bedcovers are calling. 🙏Thanks to all who braved the wet terrain and went out for a walk anyway!

PS - and the pumpkin beer after was a sweet seasonal treat!

😈When does backpacking becomes a full body sport? When you’re on The Devil’s Path, of course! So proud of these ladies for making their way up, over, down & through the rocky terrain of the eastern half of the Catskills most infamous trail last weekend!

We were rewarded for our efforts with amazing views and a most spectacular sunrise, but it’s the team effort and the camaraderie between these ladies that makes me smile the most! They helped each other when setting up camp, lent a hand through the tight squeezes, and managed to keep each other’s spirits up by laughing and sharing stories along the way.

That ol’ Beelzebub ain’t got nothing on these badass backpackers! 💪

📣Just a few spot’s left for this weekend’s Devil’s Path Overnight in the Catskills!!

The Devil’s Path is one of the infamous traverses in all of The Catskills, but don’t let the name scare you away! We’ll take on the four 3500-foot peaks that make up its Eastern half, just like we do any other trail — one step at a time! On this trip we’ll get to camp out in the backcountry too, taking in the tranquility of the trees that surround us.

🚇 🚍 No car, no prob! This hike offers a part-public transit, part-carpool option.
