After a big week back at work we thought it would be remiss of us not to check out the local establishments in our new hometown of Gladstone for the next few months or so. First stop, Wards brewery. Some nice beers here that will bring us back for more for sure lol 👍🏼🍻🍻

Spent a night at a free camp on the Calliope River before we headed into Gladstone. Was a great spot and you need to be fully self contained. We stayed on the Northern side which is a little nicer than the southern side in our opinion. 👌🏼🐊

Wow!! We can now see what all the hype is about at this “resort”. Such an awesome park with the most amazing facilities! Swim up pool bar and pool area is fantastic. So many adult and kid options and activities here! Quick couple of nights here to catch up with family and friends on our way up north to Gladstone to see friends and stop and do some work for a couple of months.

We are in Darwin for a week and a half or so. There is so much to see and experience. These are just a few pics from our first few days here. We have learnt a lot about the bombings in Darwin in WW2 on Feb 1942. We visited Stokes Hill Wharf which was one of the main sites bombed by the J**s, the Darwin waterfront precinct which has a man made “safe to swim” beach and wave pool, Darwin museum which had exhibits from Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and WW2 to name a couple, and the famous Mindil Beach sunset markets, which had amazing food options to sit on the beach with and enjoy a sensational Darwin sunset 🌅

Litchfield National Park - such a beautiful National Park with lots to explore. A few of the falls were still closed due to waiting for clearance that no crocs were in there after recent wet/floods. However we managed to check out the Magnetic Termite Mounds, Florence Falls where we had a nice cool off in the crystal clear creek, Lost City which was a 4wd track in and really cool to see and the sensational and most popular Wangi Falls. No swimming here at the moment due to still having a Croc trap set to make sure no crocs in there. 😬🐊

Dundee Beach -Wow!! We loved our stay here! What an awesome spot about 130km west of Darwin, with good fishing and amazing sunsets over the water. The caravan park is great, with new amenities/camp kitchen and even a big screen TV to watch the first Origin game!! Emma caught a Cod off the rocks and I hired a boat for a day with Garry whom was our neighbour in the park (and wife Gemma), and we managed to catch a couple of Cod and Golden Snapper and a Jew. We watched a guy reel in a 2m Tiger shark off the rocks next to boat ramp too! Apparently they catch heaps of sharks there!! 😬
The water there is so pristine and such a shame you can’t swim there as Crocs and sharks present!! We took a drive to Crab Claw Island for lunch at the resort which was beautiful. Was like you were on a tropical Island somewhere! Watched the choppers land and take off every day at Dundee and Crab Claw as part of a Pub Crawl you can do out of Darwin. 4 different pubs In regional area for $1000 a pop!! 🌅 🎣🚁🐊 🦈 🍻

So we left Kakadu and stayed in an “oasis” in the middle of nowhere called the Bark Hut Inn, on our way to Darwin. What a place!! It was bloody fantastic! Awesome campgrounds with amazing new amenities/ camp kitchen, all made to look rustic. Also a beautiful pool area as well. It has a great bar and meals area with awesome meals and cold beers!! There is a resident Saltie named Harry, a water buffalo named Jill and a small Freshie in the gift shop area named Colin lol. We stopped in at a couple of rivers en route and spotted several descent Salties sunning themselves on the muddy banks. So cool to see in their natural habitat! We also found some rock carvings just up the road from the Bark Hut Inn that were carved a while back by a Japanese fellow who was world renowned. Apparently he has art all over the world. The large “rice” carving was his last, as he passed away suddenly before he finished it entirely!

Kakadu part two - we stayed at Jabiru to check out Ubirr and Cahill’s Crossing. The Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr was incredible. We did the loop walk and up to the lookout where a scene in Crocodile Dundee was filmed apparently. The rock art told stories of their lives there over thousands of years. Cahill’s Crossing was cool to see. We were hoping to spot a lot more Crocs than just the one we saw, but apparently it’s not till the end of July that they’re really heavily populated in that area, feeding on the Barra as the river flows over the rocks and roadway at high tide. Would be great to see! 🐊

Kakadu part one - we stayed at Mardukal campground just near Cooinda for a night so we could do the Yellow Water wetlands cruise at sunrise the next morning. It was such a great experience with so much wildlife to see. Crocs, water buffalo, massive pigs, Jabiru, Brolga’s, Eagles and Magpie Geese to name a few. So many different species of birds, it was truely amazing. And those Salties up close were something else!!!! We also did a walk at Nourlangie Rock to see some Aboriginal rock art which was so cool to see!! Amazing to think these were drawn literally thousands of years ago!!! 😱👌🏼

Edith Falls - it’s at the northern end of the Nitmiluk National Park. We stayed there a night to do the walk and check out the falls. We had a refreshing swim at the upper pools which was nice. It was a bit fresh. Only took Emma about 20 mins of standing in the shallows to finally get in lol 👍🏼😂

Katherine - we stayed out at Nitmiluk National Park to explore Katherine Gorge. The gorge was spectacular and the hike was hot lol. Managed to have a refreshing swim in the Southern Rock hole which was nice. Bit of a rock scramble down to it then of course back up also, but it was well worth it! We also checked out the hot springs which were close to town. 👌🏼

Bitter Springs at Mataranka was a nice natural spring fed creek to relax and float around in. It is pretty much crystal clear and a warm 30 odd degrees which suited Emma lol. Mataranka hot springs were nice too. Similar temp but more of a man made pool type swimming area, still fed by a natural spring though. Tried the local river for a Barra with no luck! Bitter Springs campground was a good and safe place to stay and only a 15 min walk to the springs. 👌🏼

Banka Banka was a nice stopover for a night on our way to Daly Waters Pub. It was a great spot with lots of cool old stuff lol. Not as much good old stuff as the iconic Daly Waters Pub though! So cool to finally visit here as it’s been high on our list of must sees! Tim’s junkyard was full of cool stuff. We camped out the back for the night and I enjoyed their famous Beef n Barra for dinner. It was bloody good! Some live music, cold drinks and good company made for a great afternoon and evening! 👍🏼🍻

We left Alice Springs with our next stopover being the Devils Marbles for the night. It was a great spot to camp and the Marbles were well worth seeing. You are asked not to photograph certain areas due to cultural reasons. We stopped in at Aileron on our way there to check out a couple iof awesome Indigenous sculptures! 👌🏼

Alice Springs - we arrived via a pretty corrugated and washed out road from Kings Canyon. With out ensuite door deciding to part ways with the door runner. We stayed at Temple Bar CP which was a lovely and safe spot about 15 mins out of town. Our first day trip from there was into the East Macdonnell ranges. We did most of the Binns track out there which was fun. Saw some aboriginal rock carvings, historical buildings and old gold mines. The scenery out there was spectacular and the flies were super friendly. We even had to get out our fly nets for the first time!! 😩

Kings Canyon - just WOW!! What an unreal sight to see and experience! We stayed at the Kings Canyon Tourist Park which was great. It has a nice sunset bar out in the open near the new Towers of Light display. The sunset was amazing. We did the Kings Canyon rim walk which was awesome. Probably our favourite hike to date! So spectacular and so much too see! Really steep for the first bit then fairly good going for the rest. Took us about 3.5hrs to do. Sensational Canyon with amazing views!!! 👌🏼

Kata Tjuṯa (The Olgas) - what an amazing formation. We did the Valley of the winds walk through and around them. Lived up to its name as it was super windy through the valley. Was an enjoyable 7km hike though with spectacular views 👌🏼

Whilst we were at Uluṟu, we did the sunset camel tour which was cool. It was freezing cold up on top of “Tim Tam” our camel but was worth it. We also visited the Field of Light another night. Was nice to walk through the 50,000 solar powered lights that would take up 7 football fields apparently! 🐪 👌🏼

We crossed into the NT from SA. We had a free overnight stay at Curtain Springs then onto Uluṟu - Wow just wow! What a special and spiritual place! It absolutely takes your breath away! We did the 10.6km base walk with friends we’d met and also braved the freezing mornings for sunrise and chilly evenings for sunset on the rock! So amazing and totally worth it! A big ticket item ticked off our list! 👌🏼

Coober Pedy - Wow what a place! Quite different to most places we’ll travel to! Opal mining capital of the world and such a quirky place in so many ways. We stayed at Riba’s which was just out of town. It’s an old Opal mine which has underground rooms and camping, as well as caravan sites. Most of all it’s a safe place to stay at! I did the underground Opal mine tour on site which was really cool. Learnt a lot about how opals are mined and the different processes and ways to mine them. Still a very primitive way of getting the Opal out of the sandstone. Literally with a pick and hammer! We went out to the Breakaway’s for a sunset which was magic! Checked out the 3 underground churches in town which were amazing, as well as the underground cafe and bar. So amazing to see how most of the 1500 odd population live underground here due to the extreme temperatures in summer and winter. The whole place was pretty cool and a big eye opener for us that’s for sure!

The Oodnadatta Track - so cool!! First stop we stayed at the back of the Marree Pub for free. Just had to buy a couple of beers. Ok then lol. From there we hit the dirt and corrugations and headed to our next stopover for the night at the William Creek Hotel. We saw some quirky sculptures along the way as well as some old railway sidings. Also stopped at the lookout to South Lake Eyre. Close to Australia’s lowest point. Pretty cool to see the salt lake up close. While there we heard a beeping noise coming from the van and discovered the fridge had come open along the track and a fair bit of our food was scattered across the floor. 😩 Taped the door shut after that lol. We continued to William Creek Hotel for the night and discovered that we’d snapped a fitting in our water line so no water for the night 😩
We managed to get something to fix the issue the following day once we arrived at Coober Pedy! 👍🏼 Was so cool to do that part of the Oodnadatta Track 👌🏼

Northern end of the Flinders Ranges. We free camped at Parachilna Gorge. It was so peaceful and beautiful. We visited the small town of Blinman on our way. After leaving the gorge, we stopped in at the Prarie Hotel in Parachilna to sample their infamous feral menu for lunch. I tried the feral mixed grill. It was different but good i reckon. Just had to be done! 👍🏼

The Flinders Ranges - we stayed at Rawnsley Park Station which was great! Close to the infamous Wilpena Pound. The ranges were spectacular to say the least and everything we expected. We did a few hikes and 4wd tracks to lookouts and ruins from the 1800’s. We also took a drive through the Brachina gorge and Booyen gorge which were also spectacular! Such a beautiful part of the country to see and explore. We absolutely loved our time here. 👍🏼⛰️

Clare Valley and surrounds. We stayed a couple of nights in Brinkworth at the RV stopover to explore the Clare Valley and it’s surrounds. Lots of nice places to visit. We saw some pretty cool silo art and a pink salt lake with the “real” lockness monster in it lol. This was at Lochiel. We checkout out the Clare Valley brewing co and a couple of the other local pubs. Oh and we grabbed some Coffin Bay oysters from our visit to Port Wakefield to try. They were bloody good! 👌🏼

The Barossa - what a wonderful place. We arrived and the Vintage Festival happened to be on. It’s only on every 2nd year so it was good timing for us! So this meant that there was plenty going on at the wineries and in the main little towns of Tanunda and Nuriootpa. Including live music, markets, parades and even auctions of wines, local produce and animals (live and dead lol). There was such a good vibe in the whole Barossa and we loved it there. We visited a few wineries, breweries and distilleries and enjoyed some tastings. We might have purchased a few too many bottles of red, etc. Emma really enjoyed our visit to Maggie Beer’s farm shop. Was such a nice place with so many goodies to purchase. We stayed in the little town of Greenock at the Sports/recreation field which was off grid and cheap and only a short walk to the pub, brewery and cafe!! Winning!!! We met some really nice people here and everyone in the whole area were super friendly and very welcoming. We’ll be back for sure. 🍇 🍁 🍷 🍻

Hahndorf - what an awesome little town in the Adelaide Hills. We’d heard so much about it so just had to check it out for ourselves. So much German history there with such a cool vibe. Had to have a pork knuckle, pretzel and a stein. Also tried a beer paddle at the German brewery. PROST!!!! 🍻🍻

The Adelaide Hills - we based ourselves in a nice off grid camp on a private property in Birdwood. It was right behind the National Motor Museum as it turned out! So of course we had to pay a visit. What a massive collection of cars, bikes, trucks & buses with so much history, especially with Holden. This makes sense considering the Holden factory was in the Adelaide area when they were built here. You could easily spend the best part of a day here taking it all in and due to the sheer size of the collection. We visited Hahndorf which we loved and it lived up to all expectations. Will put up a separate post on that. We also visited many of the other small towns in the Adelaide Hills area. So much history all with German heritage dating back to the early to mid 1800’s when they settled here. We found a couple of breweries, cheese & chocolate factories too lol. We took a drive up to Mount Lofty summit with views over Adelaide and out to the coastline. After that we thought we might as well take a drive into Adelaide city seeing as though we were so close. Took a drive past the Adelaide oval which was cool. Gather round in the footy was in full swing do there was plenty happening around the city. We loved the Adelaide Hills and our time there 👌🏼

Robe and Beachport. What stunning little places on the SA Limestone coast. Just a pity it was so bloody windy and a tad chilly too. So much history with beautiful old buildings and rugged coastlines. We stayed in Robe at the Robe Holiday Park which was great. Large grassy sites with heaps of space.

Well we’ve crossed the border from Victoria into SA to our first stop in Mt Gambier. We had to either eat or throw our fruit and some veg into the quarantine bins at the border. Mt Gsmbier is beautiful and very fascinating. Heaps of sinkholes, caves and lakes especially Blue Lake to see and explore. Most of these due to the volcanic activity in the past in the area. Umpherston sinkhole was the main attraction and lived up to all of its hype. It was truely amazing and beautiful. Blue lake was gorgeous too. We also visited the nearby fishing town of Port Macdonnell which houses the largest fleet of rock lobster fishing boats in Australia. Apparently it’s the closest town to the Continental shelf. Must be good for lobsters I guess lol.

We stayed at a Scout camp near Warrnambool over the Easter long weekend to explore the western end of the Great Ocean Road and surrounds. It was truely spectacular to see the 12 apostles, The Grotto, London Bridge, The Razorback, Gibsons Steps, Bay of Islands, etc. We also checked out Port Fairy and Warrnambool as well. Port Fairy is a gorgeous little seaside town with a good vibe and was absolutely jam packed over Easter and we can see why. We loved it there.

The Great Ocean Road - one of our big bucket list things to explore. We stayed at Torquay for a couple of nights to explore the Eastern end of the GOR. We were there a day or so before the start of the Rip Curl Pro at the infamous Bells Beach. It was cool to wander around and check out Bells and where it was all about to happen. We checked out the GOR Chocolatire which was bloody good. And we also found the iconic Great Ocean Road Arch. The drive and coastline down a far as Lorne and Apollo Bay was amazing. I just had to partake in a famous Scallop Pie which was Yummo!! So much amazing scenery which lived up to our expectations. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the GOR which had most of the main attractions.

We spent a night in Melbourne so we could get a few small issues fixed with our van at the Urban factory and also get Patty Patrol serviced. Whilst this was being done, we took a train ride into Melbourne CBD to kill a few hours. We visited Artvo which was really cool and wandered around the Docklands area. Checked out some insane cruiser boats! We also caught a free tram into the city centre and had a wander around for a bit. Picked up car and van late arvo and headed down the road to Geelong Showgrounds for the night.

Wilson’s Promontory- whilst staying at Tidal River campground, we took a boat ride to South Point, the most southern point on the Australian mainland. We were so blessed to see a Blue whale cruising along the coastline, which is very rare. So much so that the 2 tour guides were beside themselves that they were seeing this too. It’s usually the Southern right whales they spot down there. We also saw a Seal colony on the rocks which smelt bloody fishy lol. It was pretty cool to see and be next to the most southerly point. We also cruised around Skull rock which was amazing. It has a massive cave in it which was cool. It was a great experience overall 👍🏼👏🏻

Wilson’s Promontory- what a place! We stayed at the Tidal River campground which was awesome. It’s where you can access the most southerly point of the Australian mainland, either by a boat cruise or a 2 day return hike. We chose to do the scenic boat cruise which was awesome. Pics of that will be on our next post. We did the hike up to Mount Oberon Summit which offered sensational views. We also did some Wombat spotting at night and enjoyed an array of different wildlife including lots of parrots. Also tried a bit of fishing in the limited fishing spots here due to the massive marine park surrounding the area. Managed only a couple of small salmon type fish. Was such a relaxing and amazing time spent here.
