We wish you all Happy New Year and to start 2024 our January calendar picture is a wintry day at St Mary's Church, Rostherne, Cheshire. There has been a church on this site since the 12th century, when it was mentioned in a deed of 1188.

Merry Christmas from England.

Middlewich, Cheshire.
December 2023.

Dear Friends,

Who would have thought that back in the mid 1990s, when we first had the ideas for Homemade Holidays, that thirty years later we would still be roaming around the country, and sharing our favourite spots with our visitors? Well, here we are at the end of another year and having strong thoughts of retirement. However, we still have more trips to do, old friends to welcome and places to visit.

This has been another year of north and south; Cornwall to Scotland. We started the year in Yorkshire. Exploring tea rooms and meeting little lambs on the farm. Then up to Scotland, to stay in a cosy bothy in the grounds of a grand stately home. Ending the trip with a memorable stay at the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland, with a lovely Scottish meal and withdrawing, Downton Abbey style, afterwards for post prandial drinks, before a roaring log fire in the drawing room.

We then had a lovely trip to Devon, staying in one of our favourite places, an old thatched tithe barn on the edge of Dartmoor. Exploring some of the fine local West Country houses and gardens.

Back up to a sweltering Scotland in June. Which contrary to beliefs, does get hot in the summer. Into the 90s on the Black Isle! Sampling the delights of Edinburgh, Tayside and Inverness, before island hopping in the Hebrides. Calling in to pass the time of day with a fine swordsmith on Skye, and wonder at his craft skills. Then taking several small ferries to the magical island of Iona, where we experienced the peaceful atmosphere and the summer solstice in this special place.

From the far north to as far south as you can go for our final trip of the year and off to Cornwall. Poldark, Doc Martin and ancient archeological sites all needed exploring. Plus visits to the local fish market and picking fresh blackberries from the hedgerows for a magnificent meal of the finest Cornish fayre.

So now we look forward to next year. We are cutting back on our tours, as retirement beckons, but we still look forward to welcoming old friends (some older than others!) to our shores.

In these troubled world times we hope that you have a warm and healthy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

With our very best wishes,

Paul & Pauline.

November’s calendar picture is Roslyn Chapel. Founded in 1446 is is one of the most enigmatic churches in Scotland, with connections to the Templars, the Knights of St. John and the Gypsies. This is one of the few churches to have survived the ravages of time, iconoclasts and changes in forms of worship. It abounds with extraordinary decoration, legends, myths and possibly the Holy Grail!

October’s calendar picture is of the majestic Menai Bridge in North Wales (Pont Grog y Borth, in Welsh). Built by Thomas Telford 1826, it was the world's first major suspension bridge. Connecting the Isle of Anglesey to the Welsh mainland, it stand 102 ft above the Menai Strait. At a height to allow tall masted sailing ships to pass beneath.

August’s calendar picture is of the strange buildings to be found in hop growing areas such as Kent, Sussex and Herefordshire. An Oast House is a building used to dry fresh hops before they are sent to the brewers, to be used for flavouring beer.

Several people have been concerned about stories that U.S citizens will need a visa to visit Europe. This may be the case for the EU but as we are no longer part of that organisation no visa will be required to visit the UK.

Here is what the UK government website says:

"You will not need a visa to come to the UK

You can stay in the UK as a tourist for up to 6 months without a visa, but you must meet the Standard Visitor eligibility requirements".

See you soon!

It’s June and nearly half the year gone already. This month’s calendar picture is Mermaid Street in Rye, Sussex. This steep cobbled street, has buildings, such as the Mermaid Inn dating back to 1156. This was once the haunt of smugglers and there is still a labyrinth of old smuggler tunnels and escape routes underneath the inn.
