This is a bit of a travel consultant rant. There are many reasons travellers become annoyed, upset or angry with airlines. I had a client booked on a return itinerary: Frankfurt - Montreal - Edmonton. The airline cancelled the Montreal - Edmonton flight. The traveller was rebooked to fly: Frankfurt - Montreal - Ottawa - Toronto - Edmonton. The original flight from Montreal to Edmonton had been cancelled but was replaced with another flight that departed at the same time. There was space on this new flight and it was the same airline. Unbelievable! This comes on the heels of an airline changing a very high status clients itinerary from an 18 hour day to a 44 hour multi-day gauntlet with multiple overnight layovers the traveller would have to pay for. Thank you for your loyalty! Airlines have enough legitimate challenges they cannot prevent that result in client angst and less than desirable media attention. Rerouting a client in a respectful or at least logical way IS within the airlines control. Why do airlines invite this negativity? Makes no sense to me.
Astoria, Oregon is a lesser travelled cruise port on the mouth of the Columbia River. It is probably one of the friendliest ports of call anywhere. There is a 100+ year old trolley that takes you into town if you are not able to do the beautiful river front walk. There are two great independent bookstores on Commercial Street - Lucy’s Books and Godfather Books. @patspantryspices, also on Commercial Street is the most amazing shop filled with an incredible selection of spices and teas from all corners of the world. And the unmissable @bluescorcherbakerycafe where you must head to early if you want a browned butter cinnamon roll. And for quilters and knitters check out @homespunquilts where you will find locally spun and hand dyed wools along with a colourful selection of fabrics for your next project. This just scratches the surface - there is a strong food truck culture, distilleries and breweries, galleries, restaurants and so much more. This is a glimpse into small town USA where you feel the warmth of the community. @explorajourneys included this port of call as part of a pacific coastal cruise in May 2024.

@tallerdetapasbcn is a restaurant we first visited in Barcelona in 2022. Where to begin? The staff are excellent. And it has a vibe and ambience that leaves you feeling comfortable and relaxed. And 36 month aged Iberian jambon, patatas bravas with smoked paprika, eggplant with lime and honey, fried padron peppers chased with a shared slice of torta queso also make it a place we will return to when in Barcelona. Travel and food are intrinsically linked. 😋

St. Lucia, Aerial Sky Tram
On a last minute whim an excursion seemed a good idea as we stood facing the duty-free shopping area in the port upon arriving on St. Lucia. We are happy to have acted on this whim. We went in the afternoon so it was quite peaceful. The sky tram was built with preservation of the jungle in the forefront and it is beautiful. It is like the jungle is hugging you. There were hummingbird flitting about. We saw the national bird - a green parrot. And when the tram car was stopped to listen to the jungle it was filled with bird sounds. It really was soul soothing. The tram cars carry just 8 people and you are in the air for an hour. It really was delightful and worth the 45 minute drive from the port.

Grenada, in the Caribbean, is known for its for beautiful spices (and people and architecture and food, etc). The Regent Splendor docked and we set off on small group tours. My choice of course involved spices. A spice farm excursion was like transporting into a fresh new world - nutmeg, allspice trees, cloves, intoxicating herb scents, peppercorns, tasting fresh cocoa, this is a sensory overload in a delightful way. What is so wonderful is how well priced the spices are at their shop. And they are well packed for travel home. The guides are so well informed about both culinary and medicinal uses. Everyone went away with something new in their culinary or curing arsenal!
