Underwater Fluorescence Cape Town I am the first person to discover underwater fluorescence in Cape Town's oceans and document it with photography.

The first time underwater fluorescence has been investigated and documented in South Africa - specifically the unique waters of Cape Town. Fluorescent photography involves shining a blue light (or excitation source) and seeing which creatures transform the light into a different wavelength and thus appear as a different colour. A barrier filter is required on your mask (and camera lens) in order f

or you to be able to see the fluorescence. I was very excited to see if we had any fluorescence in temperate waters as it is well known to occur in tropical waters. I was very surprised at just how many things transform into different colours under my blue lights at night and my mission now is to capture them with photography so that I can document and share them with the world. Please follow my journey into the fluorescent world of Cape Town via my facebook, instagram and twitter accounts.

I was in Durban a couple of weeks ago for a work trip but I managed to get some ocean time in. I booked a couple of snorkel sessions with Tidal Tao in Ballito - I highly recommend them! The best part - you are in shallow rock pools so no scuba (or experience) needed and you see just as much as you would on a dive! I did a night snorkel in Thompson's Bay rock pool - my first tropical water fluo sighting... WOW! Absolutely breathtaking.

Unfortunately bit of a camera set back at the moment but all should be sorted soon. My next fluo mission is a Red Sea trip in July. I really can't wait!

There’s a wholly different and mesmerising world, hidden in plain sight, at night, underwater. There are things that glow in the dark. That’s what we learnt in February this year when Mike Markovina of Moving Sushi introduced the Two Oceans Aquarium to Jacques Vieira, founder of the Fluorescent Shar...

Back from a wonderful week of collaboration and data collection with Fluorescent Shark Project South Africa and Moving Sushi. We went looking for the cow sharks on Saturday which unfortunately eluded us (or were lurking just beyond our lights!) and then spent a few days at the South African Shark Conservancy in Hermanus where we got to show everyone glow in the dark sharks. We ended off our week with a fluo dive at my favourite place, Rooi Els which was a lot of fun and revealed some interesting sightings. It was so great to share my passion with like minded scientists and to discover more questions about what fluo and why.

Its really great to collaborate with other fluo divers, we have discovered so much already! Great dive last night, I don't think I got great pics but will put up some later. Looking forward to the rest of the week's data collection
