Galice Creek along Bear Camp Road to the gate. Evidence of mine claims abound.
As the Rogue River winds from the Cascades to the ocean it cuts through the Siskiyou Mtns and makes a great corridor for adventure. Sadly, as I write this in aAug/Sept of 2022, the Rum Creek Fire is devastating this area. I plan to go back this October to witness its sad devastation.
They REALLY want to discourage the unprepared from using this road through the mountains to the coast. Most, if not all, of these signs weren’t here when we last drove this road in 2007. Why? On November 25th, 2006, James Kim, missed the turn off to Hwy 42 & instead tried to cut through the mountains here. They became stuck in the snow about 15 miles in near Bear Camp Viewpoint. Mr Kim thought Galice was only 4 miles away & attempted to hike out after being stuck for days & running out of food for his wife and their daughters (4yrs & 7mo). He is believed to have walked 10 miles before dying of hypothermia in Big Windy Creek, about a half mile from the Rogue River. Sadly, their car was only a mile from a fully stocked River Resort. A helicopter found the family after 9 days, 7 days after Mr. Kin had set out. A tragic reminder that these forests are truly remote areas.
BNSF Pigeon Point Tunnel #18 - just North of Taylor Shellfish Farms. Built in 1902 as part of the Chuckanut cutoff between Burlington and Bellingham, WA. Concrete lined in 1912. 1,115 feet long & only 12 feet above sea level.
Taylor Shellfish Farm has positively exploded since we last visited. There used to be spots for about 3-4 cars on poorly maintained gravel around a single shack which sold bulk oysters. There was a weatherbeaten wood picnic table you could eat at off towards the water. Today, it’s a thriving entertainment spot with a restaurant and a long line and a large patio & seating. The shop is busy & crowded. It now has a 9+ car paved parking lot & at least 2 dozen cars lined the railroad tracks stretching off into the distance. They also have a restaurant outpost in Seattle. Wow, what a difference the passage of time can make. We definitely didn’t see this coming.
Chuckanut Drive is a great daytrip. We usually approach from the South with lunch in Conway, ice cream at Snow Goose Produce then hit La Conner and work our way up to Bellingham. This time, we did it the other way around.
Winter Fun at Snoqualmie Pass. After 13 years of doing a winter trip near Snoqualmie Pass, we finally did the tubing course. This inner-tube hill conveyer belt was fun. February 21, 2022
Getting in some practice at home with son. Piano Ranch is a nice local park to practice at if you get it to yourself.
Woodrat Mountain Paragliding Launch is less than 30 minutes from Medford. If you catch it just right, you can have it largely to yourself & that’s when I went up for drone flight #2. Alot of drone flying is you either standing looking down at a screen or searching the sky for the drone itself. I have to hand it to DJI, the 2nd to last shot was how close the “Return to Home” function came yo a perfect landing despite touring around a moderately windy peak. The last shot is what happens when you’re dumb enough to try landing the drone inside your truck. Altitude variance caused it to clip the top of the rear hatch & I had crash #2. These shots were February 13th, while I’ve tried to keep chronological, data overload from the drone has overwhelmed me.

Maiden High Flight. It’s painfully slow but it highlights the horrific scars of clearcuts, the tree carpeted slopes of the Siskyous, an R50 from just above (including my dented hood), & some very beginner drone flying
Sadly, one of our neighborhood bobcats was hit by a car this week. I went to collect his body & bury him (or her) but someone had already removed him. Rest in Peace Buddy, you will be missed.
Dusk Hiking! Likely only of interest to myself & my family but this clip my son recorded shows just how dim the lighting really was on alot of our late Fall, early Winter Hikes.
This hill is the crux of this trail. The camera doesn’t show it but it’s a steep s-curve with loose rock & fair sized obstacles. It’s steep & loose enough that you have to worry about slipping snd falling down it while walking. We were still a little rough, but getting smoother.
Well....it got worse. To be fair, my wife and I haven’t been doing any meaningful spotting together in over a decade and she was a bit stressed. I find it amusing that my “how’d that happen?” sounds 100% like my father. Again, please excuse some cursing - a bit Dad’s fault too. He used to joke that he realized the example he was setting when, as a toddler, I’d hit something with my toy hammer cry out “Damnit!”.
