What is VISITAX?
VISITAX is a new tax introduced in Mexico in April 2021, specifically for the State of Quintana Roo, to fund the reactivation and future development of the tourist sector. This tax is separate from the Mexico Tourism tax attached to airline tickets and the Environmental tax collected at most all-inclusive resorts. All tourists over the age of 4 are required to pay the VISITAX, which is currently (as of June 2023) $259 MXN (around $15 USD) per person.
Where and How to Pay VISITAX?
Despite some confusion and debate around the enforcement of this tax, it is recommended to pay it to avoid potential penalties now or in the future. The tax can be paid before or during your trip. The only official link to pay prior to the trip is: https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/
Be aware of scam sites that may charge more for the VISITAX.
If you encounter issues with the official VISITAX website, try using a different browser or credit card. Payment can also be made directly at Cancun International Airport, where there are payment booths and kiosks set up in Terminals 2 and 4, at arrivals.
What Information is Needed to Pay VISITAX?
When paying the VISITAX, you will need to provide the full names of every person in the group, the number of people in the group, the passport number of everyone in the group, and the group’s date of departure from Mexico. This information is required whether you pay online or on arrival.
Visitax is the State Government application for the payment of contributions from foreign tourists. To complete the process, provide the requested information and proceed to the corresponding payment.
