"Now don't you worry. Everything's fine. Might get a little lonely, here in the Maritime. Down at the seawall. I fed the gulls my coffee and my toast. And I'm sending all my love from the Acadian Coast."
- Traditional Acadian Tune

Bar Harbor gets its name from the sand and gravel bar that blocks the western end of the harbor when it’s exposed for a few hours on either side of low tide. The bar, extending north from Bridge Street, makes a natural bridge out to a tidal island that in previous centuries has been called Bar Porcupine, and Rodick’s Island (after the family that owned it from the late 1700s to the early 1900s).

The southernmost of the Cranberry Islands, about four miles from Mount Desert Island, Baker Island was settled in the early 1800s by William and Hannah Gilley and their three children.

Today Baker Island, except for a few private summer homes, is part of Acadia National Park. A popular, ranger-led boat tour in season allows visitors to explore the island, and picnic on the massive rock slabs that line Baker’s southern shore.

Sieur de Monts Spring was a favorite location of George Dorr’s, the first superintendent of Acadia who built a springhouse there in 1909 and had the words ‘Sweet Waters of Acadia’ carved into a large rock.

The Sieur de Monts area is home to the Wild Gardens of Acadia, many hiking and walking trails, and an Acadia National Park nature center. It also is the original site of the Abbe Museum.

Egg Rock, at the entrance to Frenchman Bay, has been known as a home for seabirds since it received its name from French explorers in the late 1600s. Bald eagles also are often spotted there. Today it is part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge and administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
