After having the kids watch the original Miracle Worker movie, we took a fun trip to the Helen Keller birthplace in northern Alabama. It was great to tour the grounds and her home and see the original water pump where she first learned to communicate!

We took a freezing cold afternoon to tour the beautiful grounds of Abe Lincoln’s birthplace in Kentucky. What an honor it is to have these places preserved in our country. This memorial is the first of its kind and has 56 stairs for the 56 years he lived, 16 windows to represent his being the 16th president and was specifically designed to house and protect his log cabin birthplace!

Located across the street from a Thousand Trails RV park is Diamond Caverns in Kentucky. A steep climb down a stair case lands you inside a beautiful cavern with all the usual limestone formations. Some of my favorites were of course, the one that looks like a gigantic friendly llama and the ones that look like logs- petrified logs! It must have been 20 degrees outside but the temps in the cave kept us all nice and warm.

During our stay in Louisiana, we hit up Mardi Gras World. At this location in New Orleans, you can actually see where and how the float pieces are made. Walking right through the showroom, you can talk with artists and see new pieces being made as well as old pieces stored away. It was a great experience, not to be missed. .

It’s been a long time since we posted- but we’re doing just fine. We had a major life change this past summer so we needed to spend a bit of time in Florida sorting it all out. We haven’t traveled during that time but we will be back on the road soon!

With that said, I have a few things that I’ve never posted!

On our way across the US from California this past summer, we stopped over in Utah. We had a chance to see a Golden spike national historic site and it was breathtaking. When A park is actually located away from modern life, you get the actual sense of being there in that time. We weren’t there on a weekend when you can see the reenactment of the spike being put in, but we were able to see the locomotives heading back to the round house for the evening. The kids are in their junior ranger badges and we got a good dose of American history. So many times since then my children have encountered references to the laying of the transcontinental railroad. And they love to blurt out every time- “We’ve actually been there! “

Crescent Beach is a great place to sand dollar hunt- especially at low tide and before everyone else gets there. We did neither so we only found pieces and a couple tiny ones to collect . But we did find many living sand dollars which was a treat as was the starfish!

For our next two hikes in the Redwoods- we went south to Prairie Creek State Park.
Hike #3: Cathedral Trail from the Visitors Center to “Big Tree”. I didn’t show any pictures of Big Tree because it really is just one of many. But this walk was my favorite. Without a 3-D camera it’s difficult to show all the books and crannies. But it truly was an Ewok Village all throughout. The trail is moderate with a good climb throughout and the trail crossed everywhere with roots you can use as steps!

Crescent City borders the Redwoods but it’s definitely not all about the trees. Our park was walking distance from the ocean and we made several trips. This is Battery Point lighthouse and is only accessible at low tide. At that time the surrounding area becomes a great tidepool and the pathway becomes accessible. The staff were very friendly (volunteers who live there a couple months at a time). And now we’ve added another stamp to our lighthouse passport!

Redwood hike #2: Stout Grove in Jedediah Smith State Park. This was the kids favorite hike of all. So many gigantic trees that have fallen into natural playgrounds.
Most people think the National Forest was the setting for Return of the Jedi. But that movie was filmed on private property amongst Redwoods that have since been cleared. But that didn’t stop us from bringing our light sabers!

We are so excited to share with you our week spent in Crescent City, CA and the Redwood Forest. So many hikes and a lot of beach time.
Hike #1: Simpson-Reed trail in the Jedediah Smith State Park. Easy trail, plenty for the kids to play on and of course, trees beyond comparison!

Our hike to Horsetail Falls was nothing short of spectacular. While rated as moderate (and just 3.1 miles round trip), the second leg is very rocky and rated as difficult. We made it to the base of the falls and were greatly rewarded.

While in the Sacramento area, we spent a beautiful day on the American River with friends. Icy cold water from newly melted snow goes perfect on a hot summer day.
We then headed up to the Foresthill Bridge to view our beach spot below!

Riding the cable cars of San Francisco is a great experience but give it a good half day! It’s more of a tourist experience rather than a transportation although it is used for both. You can board anywhere along the line or at either one of the ends. If you board at the ends - either near Ghirardelli or Market Styx you can watch them hand turn the cars on the track as they have been doing for years. Taking photos inside is difficult because you’re so packed in. But after jumping on and off I was able to secure a spot on the outside. The cars move pretty fast so hang on tight to your kids!
