ased tour operator, Geographic Expeditions, for five years. In my role as Regional Director for Latin America, I was responsible for trip development, sales, and marketing of all trips in Central and South America while leading new cutting edge departures for the company. During my tenure at Geographic Expeditions, I was fortunate to be recognized, three years consecutively, by Conde Nast Traveler as the world's top travel specialist for Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Before Geographic Expeditions I resided in Cusco, Peru for 8 years – working as a freelance guide and operations manager for numerous local and international tour operators; leading whitewater rafting trips, trekking expeditions, luxury FIT groups and journalists on assignment throughout Central and South America.

The guide book at Hotel Aguas Claras features an abundance of excursions, but the snorkeling at Cahuita National Park definitely tops our list! Travelers have the opportunity to snorkel two different sections of the park, which includes 35 species of corals, 120 species of fish, and 40 species of crabs. 🤿🐠🪸 Of course conditions are always changing and no day is ever the same, but the odds of a few great sightings are definitely high on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica!

For world travelers with an interest in botany, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo is not to be missed. The highlight is obviously Machu Picchu–a short bus ride away–but the on-site Orchid Trail is a second showstopper. These moisture-loving flowers thrive here, particularly between November to April when the heaviest rainfall occurs in the cloud forest. 🌼📸 In fact, the garden here is the world's largest orchid collection with 372 species registered to date.

Even if the orchids aren't in bloom during a stay at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo, the trail is a wonderful, quiet way to enjoy the cloud forest before or after a visit to the ancient citadel.

After descending to sea-level from the incredible vantage point of Kurà, dozens of excursions await! The trip to Caño Island Biological Reserve is only one highlight. This small island 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) offshore is known for its beaches and coral reefs—home to an impressive 19 coral species. White-tipped sharks, manta rays, and hundreds of reef fish delight snorkelers in this veritable Costa Rican paradise. 🐠🤿🪸 In addition, Caño Island is a pre-Columbian burial ground, making it archaeologically noteworthy as well.

We recommend at least three nights, but more ideally four, for visitors to fully enjoy adventures like this while at Kurà.

The excursions guide at Puqio in Peru's Colca Valley is as beautifully curated as it is varied (and clearly—photographed!). Guests can select from a series of intimate, shared journeys ranging from nearby, half-day jaunts to full-day horseback and hiking adventures. You should always keep your camera at the ready in the Amazon—you never know who will be waiting just around the corner! This family of red howler monkeys captured on the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway waited long enough to have their portrait taken before scampering back to the treetops to find an equally suitable place to hang out. This is just one of the unique species that guests might have the good luck to spot during their stay in the Amazon with Inkaterra, either at Hacienda Concepción or Reserva Amazonica.

We have exciting news from Galapagos Safari Camp! This coming summer (June 2025), they will be introducing two family tents that sleep up to five people each. Each Family Safari Tent will have two separate sleeping areas–each with their own bathroom–connected by a shared living area. This flexible and spacious layout will be a great choice both for families and groups of friends traveling together. Note that in order to keep the overall camp experience intimate and exclusive, these tents are replacing two of the previous ones, which keeps the total count to nine.
