They really do get up close

Met a couple of these little guys in the pub, a mother and a baby. These 2 definitely weren’t shy.

Quokkas….. we finally found some. 😁. Quokkas are a small marsupial about the size of a cat, and only live on a few islands in the south of Western Australia. Cherri says to imagine a teeny tiny kangaroo, only cuter.
And I got the photo of the trip!!!! 😁

Day 9. Rottnest Island. An awesome day exploring the island, drinking with Quokkas, swimming and just relaxing.

This is at the Fremantle marina. Surrounded by restaurants and bars and is a fish sanctuary. We watched this boy and his dad feeding the fish, and the seagulls hanging around and grabbing small ones when they came up to eat.

Day 7 Boxing Day. We visited Fremantle to explore its history, visit its beautiful jetty (boardwalk) and appreciate the architecture of this historic town-and they have a good brewery too. 😁 We toured The Roundhouse, their famous round prison that sits right off the beach. We saw the statue of Bonn Scott, former front man to AC/DC, who was raised in Fremantle. And finally we enjoyed lunch at Little Creatures Brewery where I had a 10 tasting plank of some great beer! Overall a good day in Freo, as the locals call it.

Day 5. Kalgoorlie to Perth. Only 575km today to reach our Christmas destination.
Was really not a lot to look at today but we stopped at the super pit in Kalgoorlie before we left, it was spectacular. A working gold mine that is about 2.5 miles long, 1 mile wide and about 2000ft deep.

Day 4. Nullabor Roadhouse to Kalgoorlie. Today was a big day in the car. 1,090km / 680 miles. We saw some beautiful coastline early and then the great 90 Mile Straight! The longest straight road in the world, 146.6km…and no phone/internet service. But we downloaded podcasts, audiobooks and 400 songs to keep us occupied. We gave more detailed descriptions of this leg of our trip in the captions in our pics.

Day 3. Ceduna to Nullarbor Roadhouse.
First stop was the little town of Penang for breakfast and a visit to the windmill museum. This was pretty interesting, I didn’t know there was such a variety of windmills out there. Then a little off highway (ie. more dirt roads) lap around lake MacDonnell. This was Cherri’s favourite of the trip so far. An amazingly pink lake. The photos just don’t do it justice. Then more dirt roads to the little town(?) of Fowlers Bay which has nothing but a little store and a jetty. But it was a beautiful spot to watch whales going past. We didn’t see any though. Then onto the Nullarbor Roadhouse, a little store, cafe, showers, and a room for the night out in the middle of NOWHERE.

Day 2. Melrose to Ceduna. We went through a wind farm, managed to get up close to the windmills. They are huge!!
Again more dirt roads, but was worth it to have lunch at Pildappa Rock. This is a huge wave like rock that is 1500 million years old and is made up of pink granite. Then we finished our day with a walk on the jetty/dock at Ceduna and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. Ceduna is the beginning of the Great Australian Bight and the gateway to the Nullarbor plains.

We’re off on our Christmas Cross-Country Roadtrip from our home in The Barossa Valley, South Australia to Perth, Western Australia. It will be a total round trip of over 5,500 kilometres or about 3,500 miles. We’ll be driving through the outback, around the beautiful Indian and Southern Oceans, and across The Nullarbor, the longest straight road in the world. We hope both our Australian and American family and friends enjoy our adventure with us.
