Scar Stories

Scar Stories Scar Stories uses creative initiatives to help young adult cancer survivors see their scars in a new light - one that is empowering and beautiful!
(8)

Scar Stories started with one scar, one photograph. At 22, Scar Stories founder, Jasmine Gailer took a picture of her 40cm cancer scar and felt better for it! In an effort to help other young survivors see their scars in a new light too, Jas set about pairing up professional photographers with 18-35 year old cancer survivors bearing their surgical scars for the world to see and the results have be

en incredible. Scar Stories supports young adult cancer patients & survivors through:
- Creative projects
- One-on-one photoshoots
- Free art, music or photography classes

Hey there, Jasmine here,

In 2020 we are looking to wind up the legal charity component of Scar Stories Inc. We will remain as either as a not-for-profit or a project, continuing to provide photographic portraits for Young Adult patients and Survivors. There are a couple of reasons for this forthcoming change.

The first reason is that I don't have the time anymore to fundraise. I have a 2 year old daughter now! She is my everything and I willingly give her most of my time and energy. The problem is, without fundraising, Scar Stories is running at a loss year by year.

The second reason is that we don't have a Treasurer, Secretary, and President willing to run Scar Stories in 2020 and onwards. These roles aren't huge, but they do require a commitment to fulfilling the legal obligations of a charity.

If you know someone who wants to volunteer and enjoys autonomy in their work, please give them a call, tell them about Scar Stories, or share this post. We would love for Scar Stories to thrive, but unfortunately without the manpower we have no choice but to scale it back.

It was a hard decision for the management team to make, given how much of our blood, sweat and tears went in to building this amazing charity. It's our baby, our legacy.

Either way, I will continue to facilitate the Photographic portraits. Giving this opportunity to others is so important to me - it changed my life and I want to continue making that possible for others.

If you have any questions about this post please email me at [email protected]

Sincerely,
Jasmine

So very sad to hear that one of our beautiful scar models, Michaela passed away earlier this week. It is a shock. As you may know from her story on our site, she had a long long battle with cancer and resulting health issues. But this girl was a fighter, despite that sounding like a cliche. She battled so hard to enjoy life - it showed in her fierce attitude and bravery during her RockScars photoshoot. We were in awe of her. You left a legacy, Michaela xo

In 2015 one of our photographers, April Kendall met with cancer survivor Linda for a photoshoot. The process was supposed to be the same as our other photo shoots but Linda's cancer metastasised in her lungs before April was able to submit the images. It was decided that they would change the parameters and April would shadow Linda to her specialist appointments, scans, chemo and photographically chronicle her cancer journey. Now Linda and her family are fighting for her life. The last remaining option is a drug not covered by our pharmaceutical scheme, so they need help raising the funds to pay for this very expensive drug. Please help if you can.

April ~ “her strength of character and grace in the face of some supremely sh*tty situations have left her mark on me.”

Linda is a 35 year-old mum of two wonderful children, Luca aged 6 and Eloise aged 3. In May 2015, she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer in her right leg. That month she underwent extensive limb salvage surgery, resulting in her knee and part of her leg being removed and replaced...

Cancer patient, medical student and one time model for Scar Stories, Nikhil Autar recently founded a startup which aims to prevent some of the most common, preventable killers of cancer patients and vulnerable people everywhere. And he's just launched his first product into pre-sales!

Get To Sleep Easy's ‘Smart Inclining Bed’ is a hospital bed alternative that sits atop your own bed, but costs less than a tenth of the price! It can detect incidences like falls and alert loved ones and family members of emergencies like this, or if you're at risk of a pressure sore, even if you've stopped breathing!

But their mission is to make life more fun, or at least more bearable for people too. Their app will allow users to chat to other, potentially lonely users out there. It will be able to read to you, walk you through exercises and even walk you through depression screens!

100% of profits are invested back into charity! Donate at www.GetToSleepEasy.org/donatetous (tax deductible)

And you can preorder and be first in line to keep yourself or your loved ones safe at www.GetToSleepEasy.org/product/SmartIncliningBed

Get To Sleep Easy is a social enterprise. Meaning we’re aiming to donate 100% of our profits to charity. Our cause is a necessary one. As explained in our about section and dissected further in blogs which you can see here, the problem is vast. One particular figure that astounds us is that 950,00...

“It's hard to describe what it is like to read something that says you really shouldn't be alive...”

Ain’t that the truth.

Ugh statistics 😑 I’ve always hated stats and my own Cancer “well what does google say about my odds” experience, didn’t win them any new favors either. Horrible necessities in the medical research, funding and development world - I get that and respect that - but the title of this article says in all:

I am so much more than a statistic.

A good grounding reminder that we all are SO much more than any statistical prediction ❤️

Statistics can trigger thoughts no cancer fighter or survivor wants, but it's important to remember that you are much more than any number.

"We all share a desire to kick cancer's ass. But sometimes the fight isn't over even after the last clean scan. This is the story of survivorship."

Scar Stories has become an Awareness Partner for an exciting new creative venture happening with our friends at One Thousand Design. 'The Last Clean Scan' will take a look at the mental and emotional toll that physical survival takes. Celebrating the elimination of cancer, this short film will showcase survivors speaking candidly about their life after cancer, the resources available, but also the unfathomable burden - physical and mental - that they are left to endure. More specifically, the film will aim to capture the stories of survivors who are living with post traumatic stress, how they cope, and where they turn for support.

So watch this space for more news coming over the next few weeks about 'The Last Clean Scan' and how you can get involved!

In the meantime, if you would like to find out more about this great initiative, have a look here: https://www.thelastcleanscan.com/documentary/
