Marley ( )

I'm currently 14 years old and attend Washington HIgh School in Atlanta, Ga. I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and lived in Chicago prior to moving to Atlanta w my family.

I'm an adventurer and i love to travel with my family. At 10 years old i complete my first bike tour ever. It was a scouting route for a Black Freedom Outfitters Bike Tour called MajorKey, from Key Largo to Key West. I'm a member of the Bike Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) Dream Team and have completed 4 BRAG tours, the longest being 454 miles from Elajay, Ga to Darian, Ga.

I love the challenges that come with bike touring and the pace that allows me to take in my surroundings. Biking is a healthy and fun way to explore the world.

Monica(

Not sure what calls me to be outdoors but it definitely feels right and familiar. Maybe it's the hope to nap and frolic with Totoro - paired with something ancestral. My Great Grandma was a cyclist - they say, well past age 80 she would cruise around on 10 speed bike. I never got to ride with her but stories like that definitely play a role. I'm usually warm, curious, and down for a sweet (covid conscious) adventure. I bike as a commuter most often but do my best to make it as chill/steadying of a ride as possible.

Roc ( )

Being in my body and the outdoors is an assertion of Black q***r and trans life, it’s an assertion of finding my way and coming back home. Being with and of the land, the soil, sun, air, etc., is a way to be in relationship with and show reverence to my ancestors. In Touching the Earth, bell hooks said, “…When the Earth is sacred to us, our bodies can also be sacred to us.” I believe in what my ancestors both human and nonhuman new/know to be true— that healing the body is inextricably connected to the healing of the earth.

Roc is currently a doctoral candidate with a focus on historical and sociocultural aspects of sport and physical culture studies. Their dissertation project centers the narratives of Black q***r, trans and nonbinary (BQTN) bodyworkers in the United States South.

Meet the Riders: Get Low Country Bike Tour 2022, Tybee Island to Sapelo Island
•••
Erica aka Clutch ,

Wild seed traversing through outdoor spaces that have been denied to people that look like me, hailing from concrete jungles.  My soul is fulfilled when I take up space in the outdoors embracing my most authentic self, wild and free.
•••
A BFO note about Erica…
She has participated in each kind of BFO offering so far and is the first and only person to have done so. Let’s give her around of applause
•••
About the tour:

The BFO Black August offering will journey through the unbridled history: the rebellions, and freedoms that lie along the Black Georgia Coast (also known as the Low Country). We look forward to being in community and joyful resistance with you.

Tybee is a small 3.2-mile barrier island 18 miles from Savannah, Georgia. The revisionist history excludes the pain and suffering—brutal subjugation of black folk. Tybee Island holds the stories of Slave Jails: A quarantine station where our ancestors were poked and probed before families were torn apart and auctioned in Savannah. Wade-ins: The summers of 1960-1963 where young African Americans risked their lives to wade in the waters of the Tybee beach in defiance of Jim Crow laws. This unheralded part of our history led to the eventual desegregation of the former whites-only beaches 8 months before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1980, The Orange Crush Beach Parties were formed by students of Savannah State University. Over-policing of these joyful events served as a stark reminder that progress is never as close as it appears.

South of Tybee sits Sapelo Island, another barrier island that holds a unique story of its own. The island has been home to generations of the Gullah-Geechee people, direct descendants of enslaved West African people brought to the island in the 1700s and 1800s. Nine generations have tended to the land and kept the rich cultural traditions from the coastline of West Africa, such as making baskets, casting nets, and the unique music of the Sea Island Singers.

Pic 1- Tour Lead, zahra () in Sierra Leone Spring 2022

zahra be in the city yearning for the woods, water and the mountains. In recent history she discovered she aint really no city girl anymore and prefers more companionship with the wild. When in the city you will find her among the trees, flowers and watermelons.

For the last 12 years zahra has gone to the wild for healing, rejuvenation, adventure and learnings. For zahra, adventuring in the outdoors includes chasing waterfalls, playing in the dirt, bike touring, back country hiking, camping, long road trips through remote locations (think cross country using the national parks as guides and through canada), attempting to surf (once creating her own surf camp residency on Amelia Island, FL) kayaking with oyster farmers and and and.

The wild has been a place of exploration, a deep connection to self and the earth and it has served as a test of ability, will and tenderness. As co-owner of Black Freedom Outfitters, she is geeked to contribute to getting more Black folks adventuring in the outdoors and using nature as a resource for our healing and liberating ourselves.

This Black August from August 18-21, 2022, we will journey through the unbridled history: the rebellions, and freedoms that lie along the Black Georgia Coast (also known as the Low Country). We look forward to being in community and joyful resistance with yall. Join us for a 4-day bike, camping tour from Tybee Island and Savannah to Sapelo Island.

We will explore Tybee Island to Savannah while learning more about our history on its land. The bike tour provides a unique space for riders to experience this rich history collectively and individually. Riders will have the option to contribute to the success of the tour by co-leading activities (routes, meal prep, nightly accommodations, discussions, and skill exchanges).
