Christmas time in Latvia!

Christmas time in Latvia!

There's nothing quite like the atmosphere of a Christmas market to make one feel all warm and cozy. Rīga will get a festive makeover from November 29 until January 7 thanks to these magical Christmas markets, offering a whole range of foods, drinks and the local handcrafts that make great gifts (and also lets you avoid long supermarket pre-Christmas queues ;)).
Take a walk to the major markets on Dome Square, at the Esplanāde, and on Līvi Square to experience true winter wonderland with millions of tempting scents like those of a Christmas tree, mulled wine, roasted almonds or wax candles and hear the lovely sounds of Latvian songs and world-known festive melodies. Oh, and don’t forget gingerbread cookies that come in all shapes and decorations at these markets!

Every year, on the second Saturday of October, the charming city of Valmiera gives us a lesson in history, reminding of the Middle Ages when the city was an important trade centre and a member of the Hanseatic League. Accompanied by merry songs and dances, the annual Simjūda Fair (we’d like to call it a feast) brings out the best of Latvian craftsmen’s traditions.

But to enjoy Valmiera to the full, take a walk around the Old Town and don’t forget to stop by its most beautiful adornment – the ever changing Gauja River.

A bonus - Valmiera won’t leave you thirsty after the walk, because just north of the city centre you’ll find the famous Valmiermuiža brewery – a must-visit place if you have at least half as high standards as Latvians when it comes to good beer. :)

Like a golden crown on Liepāja’s cultural scene, the long-awaited concert hall Koncertzāle "Lielais dzintars" / Concert Hall GREAT AMBER has risen over the skyline of the port city.

Designed by Austrian architect Volker Giencke, the cylindrically shaped building is truly outstanding both acoustically and architecturally. It ascends 30 metres above downtown, resembling a piece of golden amber - the prehistoric, semi-precious pine sap that washes up daily on the pristine beaches of Liepāja.

It’s safe to say that a visit to this emerging cultural centre will make for an unforgettable experience, so hurry up, because the one-and-a-half-month-long world-class musical opening programme starts today!

Like unique mirrors, lakes in Latvia reflect the glory of the natural landscape in their waters. Sometimes they are surrounded by bird song, sometimes they lie in soothing stillness. But there is a lake that surprises its visitors once a year with music so ethereal it goes beyond any words.

For the past few years, the extraordinary Ezera Skaņas (Sounds of the Lake) festival in Kāls Lake has gathered festivalgoers who wish to experience the symbiosis of music and nature. Tomorrow morning musicians will perform on a floating stage in the middle of this distant lake while listeners in boats alongside will greet the sunrise.

Latvian pottery masters

What a little black dress means to devoted fashion followers, black pottery means to Latvian sense of style. It is, without any doubt, very traditional and classical, yet elegantly complements even the most contemporary interiors, thus satisfying both aesthetic and practical needs.

Our pottery masters have earned particular acclaim for turning humble lumps of clay into unique pieces of art. As one of the oldest methods, the black pottery differs from other ceramic techniques – no glazes or colouring are used and the little metallic shine is the result of scorching in an open-fire kiln.

Many pottery masters kindly open their studios to visitors and even host workshops for passionate amateurs. Follow the link to find out more: http://bit.ly/1LG1p7e

How to get the most out of summer in If you like Latvia, Latvia likes you?

How to get the most out of summer? Go on a boating trip! The math is simple - Latvia has 777 rivers exceeding 10 km in length, and 17 rivers longer than 100 km. Out of these, more than 80 are perfect for boating. Oh, and don’t you forget about the sea!

The rest is up to you – whether you choose leisurely downstream boating for a romantic weekend or a more extreme, faster river with obstacles and rapids if you want the adrenaline. There are one to even four day routes available, so you can really row your way through the ultimate summer experience. A night spent in the midst of nature itself can become an unforgettable adventure, adding enthusiasm and inspiration to return to boating again and again.

On April 18 and 19, the Riga Zoo will organize the Reptile Days!

Also, the reptiles of Latvia are slowly waking up from their winter slumber; therefore, it's high time to get to know them! From 12:00 to 16:00 in the house of the amphibians and reptiles of Latvia, it will be possible to learn about the local reptiles and find out how to act when in contact with these cold-blooded animals. There will be different activities, quizzes and games.

Latvians use to say that you can always tell if someone’s lying by looking at a person’s ears – the more they move, the more he or she lies. As it turns out, deer can move their ears in any direction, without even turning their head! So, we suggest not taking them too seriously right away :)

Did you know that deer have inhabited Latvia for the last eight thousand years? Today there are various reservoirs that offer a chance to see different types of deer at close range in their natural environment and enjoy contact with them, which is, by the way, considered to be good for your health.

Definitely a must-do while you're in Latvia! For more info, follow the link: http://bit.ly/1Bz2q8V

Because of popular demand - and plenty of awesome supply - we give you the second part of our Northern Lights over Latvia collection. As you'll see in the descriptions, this beautiful phenomenon was visible throughout the country.

In Latvian mythology Aurora borealis is called "Kāvi" and once wasn't really considered a good sign. Well, we believe this time Kāvi only appeared to please our eyes and photo camera lenses. :)

On 21st of December The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia

No more winter blues! The longest night of the year is a serious enough reason for celebration and Latvians certainly know how to make it absolutely unforgettable.

December 21 is the day when winter solstice arrives at the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum. And we invite you to be part of this traditional festivity. Find out why it is so meaningful to light a log on the eve of the solstice and if, being the shortest day of the year, it is essentially the years’ coldest as well.

Let's turn the darkness into light and stillness into dancing!
