BASM - not a fairy home, but close

BASM is a vacation home, located in Sibiu, Transylvania. BASM (which is the Romanian word for a fairy tale) was born out of two wishes: first, to carry on the memory of my grandfather, the one who built the house. He was very dear to my family and I feel his memory is kept alive by sharing the house he built with the world.

Second, because accommodation can be more than a comfortable bed and a decent bathroom. It can be an experience, the start of discovering and journeying to new places. I look at BASM as the first encounter tourists may have with Sibiu and Transylvania. The house combines a cozy and modern look with Romanian folk-inspired details, illustrations and books. Tourists also receive home prepared jam (sometimes made out from the cherries or strawberries in our garden) or zacuscă (a traditional Romanian bread spread made out of a delicious combination of vegetables). All products are on the house and bought from local producers.

Besides the house and its amenities, BASM includes a large garden, where work is still in progress (work in gardens is always in progress). The 80 sqm garden is home to an old cherry tree, strawberries and berries. The surrounding grape vines provide intimacy and shade in summer, while the colourful flowers fill the garden fence from May until late autumn. The place is very quiet and peaceful. Here one can understand the meaning of a word that describes the Transylvanian lifestyle in a nutshell – tihnă, which could be translated as peace of mind, a feeling of wellness, acceptance and contentment, similar to the Nordic ‘Hygge’. More than a vacation home, BASM is an experience, a refuge.

When fairies go on holiday, they stay here :) Come visit!
