It's been 250 years since the discovery of one of our favorite places on earth - South Georgia!

Today marks the 250th anniversary of the discovery of South Georgia! 🎉

The island was first sighted by Antoine de la Roche in 1675 before Captain Cook landed on South Georgia in 1775 – naming it after King George III.

To celebrate, we are very excited to announce our refreshed South Georgia Museum website where you can delve deeper into the fascinating stories of exploration, wildlife, and conservation that have shaped this sub-Antarctic Island.

Whether you're dreaming of visiting South Georgia or simply want to explore its wonders from the comfort of your home, our website is where your journey begins: https://sgmuseum.gs/

Incredible shot of the Seaventure in South Georgia yesterday, taken by .hergert 😍 There is still an opportunity to join us on this itinerary this season on our Feb 26th departure of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica voyage. Our guests have been enjoying some really remarkable wildlife encounters, including a huge pod of Orca feasting in the sea and a plethora of fur seals jumping and diving in the waters all around the Zodiacs. They have also enjoyed the wonderful hospitality and white sand beaches of the lovely Falkland Islands.

Today our ship is in South Georgia, a fitting place as today also marks marks the day when, on January 5th 1922, Sir Ernest Shackleton died peacefully in his cabin aboard the Quest, moored off South Georgia. RIP BOSS, a constant source of inspiration to us.

"...we (loosely) emulated Shackleton's heroic mission from Antarctica to Elephant Island to South Georgia. It provided us with the opportunity to reflect on his tenacity, persistence, and perseverance. We were also treated to the awe inspiring wildlife of South Georgia and the Falklands."

We love this beautifully shot short film, taken on a voyage earlier this season. Thanks Dan for sharing!

New whale discovered by a PL guest! Says guest and discoverer

"What an expedition! Early on the morning of December 14th while on the MS Seaventure at Danco Island, Antarctica, I photographed a humpback whale fluke just off the bow of the ship. I later took this photograph of the same whale from a zodiac. It turns out this whale is brand new to science and we discovered it! This whale is now registered and named “Nate Solo” after me and my travel moniker! You can follow where it is sighted around the world through the link in my bio to happywhale.com 🐋 I am in love with Polar Expeditions!"

Thank you to guest for sharing this lovely post. We couldn't have said it better ourselves!

"Reflecting on my expedition trip to Antarctica with Polar Latitudes. Seeing one of the most raw and untouched places on earth was completely bewildering and almost indescribable. Plus we learned so much on the trip thanks to the crew giving talks on different topics related to Antarctica, its climate, and the creatures that live there. A totally exceptional experience, and one that leaves you feeling like a tiny midge on a giant planet in the universe. 10/10 recommend everyone go at some point in their lives. Prioritize eye opening experiences and you will always feel lost, in the most educational and amazing way."

Waking up in Antarctica... there's nothing like it! Thanks Hudson and Emily for sharing your adventures.

We Are All Explorers

From the minute we are born, we are born to explore. To discover the world around us, to seek out life-shaping experiences, to indulge our boundless curiosity. Adulthood and the distractions of modern life have a way of making us forget that. Antarctica has a way of making us remember.

At Polar Latitudes, everything we do, we do with a spirit of exploration in our hearts, and with Antarctica front and center in our minds. When you journey with us, you are an explorer, too, traveling to the most remote place on earth – here to explore, to discover and, quite possibly, to be changed forever. We deliver a boutique small ship experience that offers a more close-up, personal and ultimately unforgettable experience to every explorer onboard. We embrace a spirit of improvisation and wonder as we seek out unique opportunities, whenever and wherever Antarctica offers them to us. And our expedition team is chosen for both their skill and their passion. We believe they are second to none in both those categories.

Discover Antarctica. You might just discover yourself.
