I met Dr. Ruth Westheimer in 2001 when I was working at LWW and was assigned to art direct a book that she was co-authoring with Sandy Lopater that we were to publish.
We met in the elevator when she stepped in, looked at me, then pointed at me, and in that famous thick German accented voice said, "You, you. You are that handsome man in that Gesundheit book from Germany." (I SWEAR this is a true story.) Long story made short: She had been shown a book that I had art directed and illustrated during my years with Urban & Schwarzenberg in Munich, in which I (and my family) had also modeled for some photos.
But the real fun was when few other colleagues and myself got to es**rt her to an Orioles game that night, our office being in the Eutaw Street warehouse that makes up the right field backdrop of the stadium. We sat in Owner Peter Angelos' clubhouse box. She had never been to a baseball game and I had the privilege of sitting next to her and explaining what was going on during the game. Yup, that's a memory I'll never forget.
In a word, she was a hoot. For such a diminutive person (she is standing in that photo with me), she was so much larger than life. And in my brief experience with her, I couldn't help but notice how she treated everyone the same, with kindness and consideration.
May you rest in peace, Dr Ruth.
