One of the reasons we chose San Cristobal de las Casas as a home base is because of the abundance of textiles and artisanal handcraft. Learning about the traditional weavings, Mayan culture, history of the cloth and design native to each village has been so eye opening inspiring to Amanda as a children's wear designer. Chiapas is so rich in culture and art! Here are some of our favorite pieces we have collected over the past 2 years and sold as part of Elskan's curated collection...

We spent Día de Mu***os in Romerillo-San Juan, Chiapas celebrating life and honoring those that have passed. For Día de Mu***os the graves are made to look fresh/recently dug with the dirt piled up, and fresh pine needles representing eternal life and bright chrysanthemum petals are scattered over the tops. Finally, planks of wood acting as doors are placed on top through which the spirits are said to pass, representing a gateway to the afterlife. Ofrendas (offerings) are laid upon the graves or alters, which include the deceased’s favorite food and drink, favorite objects and in the case of adults, ci******es and alcoholic beverages are placed on the graves to be shared with the departed. The “doors” are then opened so friends and family can have conversations with their loved ones. This was an experience we will never forget!
