Thomson Safaris Thomson Safaris offers photographic African safaris and Mount Kilimanjaro treks for over 40 years. Why travel to Tanzania with Thomson Safaris?

With 40 years in Tanzania, we have the answers. For a start, there's the Serengeti. It is the premier wildlife viewing destination in the world. Who among us hasn't seen awe-inspiring images of its golden plains, herds of wildebeest, giraffes, zebras and crocodiles and thought: I want to be there! But the Serengeti is only one of Tanzania's wonders. There's Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak

. There's Ngorongoro Crater, formed millions of years ago and home to nearly 30,000 animals within 10 square miles. There's Zanzibar, with its white sand beaches and rich history. There's Gombe Stream, where Jane Goodall did her ground-breaking chimpanzee research, and Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakey's made some of the most important discoveries in evolutionary science. We enthusiastically endorse Tanzania as a travel destination. It’s a place we have come to know and love for its gracious people, bountiful wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. When you explore with us, you’ll see the real Tanzania—a side few travelers get to witness. You will meet Tanzanians who are our friends. You’ll journey across pristine land. You’ll witness amazing wildlife. You’ll be left with memories that will last a lifetime, and you just may come to love Tanzania as much as we do.

When an ostrich egg hatches, the chick is already quite large compared to many other bird species. It typically weighs around 1.5 pounds at birth, and it is about the size of a football. By the time they are about 6 months old, they can reach 4-5 feet tall, though they are still not fully grown. An adult ostrich can reach up to 9 feet in height.

Even as babies, ostrich chicks are capable of running at impressive speeds. At just a few weeks old, they can run up to 30 mph!

Zebras and wildebeests often work together during the Great Migration, and their cooperation is a prime example of how species can complement each other in the wild.

🦓 Wildebeests are highly dependent on water during the migration, and zebras have an excellent sense of direction when it comes to finding water sources.

🦓 Zebras and wildebeests both rely on the grasslands as their primary food source, but they graze in slightly different ways. Wildebeests tend to graze on taller, coarser grasses, while zebras prefer shorter grasses.

🦓 The large mixed herds of zebras and wildebeests provide safety in numbers. A herd's collective vigilance makes it harder for predators to pick out an individual animal.

Did you know: In the wild, African elephants can live up to 60-70 years, and some may even reach 80 years of age. 🐘

Living in complex social groups with strong family bonds and experienced matriarchs likely contributes to their longevity. Older elephants possess valuable knowledge about food sources, water holes, and predator avoidance, which benefits the entire herd.
