Chimpanzees share 98% of their DNA with humans which makes them our closest relatives as humans. This closeness makes a chimpanzee trekking adventure so magical and worth it as it’s a shared moment with our immediate relatives in the rain forest.
Where to trek chimpanzees in East Africa,
In Uganda, chimpanzee trekking activity can be done in Kibale national, Queen Elizabeth national park and Budongo forest near Murchison falls national park. There is also chimpanzee sanctuary at Ngamba island on Lake Victoria and Kalinzu forest reserve.
In Rwanda, Chimpanzee trekking can be done is Nyungwe national park and Gishwati Mukura national park.
There is no big difference between trekking chimpanzees from Uganda or Rwanda. Both give a magical experience in forests with these amazing primates. However, the number of chimpanzees in Uganda are higher than those in Rwanda. For example, the number of chimpanzees in Kibale is higher than that in Nyungwe national park.
An estimation of 1,500 chimpanzees are in Uganda and more than 500 of them are in Kibale national park which doubles as the primate capital of the world. This high population means that the five groups of chimpanzees which are habituated in Kibale are easy to find and in big numbers by tourists.
Trekking chimpanzees is easier and interesting in Uganda especially in Kibale because of the big numbers. You will have all the chances of spotting these primates without walking for long distances. Another advantage of trekking in Kibale is the chance to encounter these primates walking in the forest other than just spotting them only in trees.
Chimpanzee habituation vs chimpanzee trekking
Chimpanzee trekking is walking through the forests in search of chimpanzees and upon finding them you spend one full hour in their presence. On the other hand, chimpanzee habituation is spending longer hours like full or half day with chimpanzees in their natural habitats. Habituation is a process of training the primates to get used to the presence of humans. This takes fear out of them so that they don’t change their behaviors when they see humans in their territory.
