To cook PEI Mussels, you really only need three things: mussels, a small amount of liquid and a pot with a lid to steam them in. All you do is add the liquid and mussels to the pot, cover it, and turn the heat up to high. When steam pours out from under the lid, the mussels are done. Easy peasy!

The great thing about campfire mussels cooked in foil is that you can use just about any combination of ingredients. Start with fresh PEI Mussels, toss in some chopped garlic and ginger, or any preferred herbs you like, a little squeeze of lime, then add your favourite beverage - wine and beer are typical go-tos, but non-alcoholic drinks like apple juice or even root beer work as well. Close the top of the foil, place on a hot bbq or hot coals and let them steam for 5-7 minutes. So easy and so delicious!🔥

There are plenty of ways to enjoy fresh PEI Mussels, and if you haven't tried Tequila Mussels yet, we highly recommend giving it a 'shot'! 😉

Serve in a shooter glass rimmed with salt (as shown here) or remove the mussel meat, break the shells in half and place the halves on a serving platter. Place two mussels on each half shell, then top with the broth. Such a fun and tasty party app!

While there are countless ways to prepare PEI Mussels, sometimes you can't beat a classic 'simple is best' bowl of Island Steamed Mussels. A couple of simple ingredients with melted butter for dipping is all you need to make your belly happy.❤️
𝙸𝚜𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚂𝚝𝚎𝚊𝚖𝚎𝚍 𝙼𝚞𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚜
🍽: 4
⏱: 10 minutes

2 lb (1 kg) fresh PEI Mussels
1 small onion, chopped fine
2 cloves of garlic, minced
2 Tbsp (30 mL) oil
1 cup (250 mL) white wine or chicken broth
2 Tbsp (30 mL) parsley, chopped

- Rinse fresh PEI Mussels under tap water. Tap any mussels that are still open and discard any that do not close after being tapped and rinsed. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan, sauté onion and garlic in oil.
- Add fresh PEI Mussels and wine or broth.
- Cover and cook for 5-7 minutes or until the shells open.
- Serve garnished with parsley with melted butter for dipping. Any leftover broth can be saved and frozen to be used in soups and chowders.

Flatbread pizzas are super hot right now, and for good reason: they're easy, tasty and come together in no time. Prepare our recipe for Balsamic Mussels as you normally would, then spoon onto an olive oil-brushed flatbread and assemble as you would a pizza. Because mussels are cooked live, knowing how to properly prepare and cook them is key for home-cooking success. Rinse and stir mussels under cold running tap water. Some mussels, called 'gapers,' slightly open their shells when out of water. For any mussels that do not close after rinsing, tap their shells or lightly squeeze them while running under the water again. For any mussels that still do not close, discard them.

Find out just how delicious cooked and chilled mussels can taste by making Marinated Mussel Salad this weekend! Mix with pasta or leafy greens to create new variations of this tried-and-true recipe that tastes oh so good!😋
Marinated Mussel Salad

5 lb (2.2 kg) fresh PEI Mussels
1/2 cup (125 mL) canola oil
1⁄4 cup (60 mL) red wine vinegar
1 cup (250 mL) sliced red onion
1 cup (250 mL) chopped scallions
2 Tbsp (30 mL) dried thyme
1 pinch salt & pepper
3 clove garlic, chopped

- Rinse fresh PEI Mussels under tap water. Tap any mussels that are still open and discard any that do not close after being tapped and rinsed. Set aside.
- Steam mussels in steamer for approximately 6 minutes.
- Place in bowl and let cool. Remove the mussels from the shells. Combine oil, vinegar, garlic, thyme, and salt and pepper.
- Add red onion and scallions and let stand for 1 hour.
- Pour marinade over mussels in bowl several times to evenly coat mussels. Mussels should soak in marinade for at least 1 hour.
- Just before serving, pour a little of the marinade over mussels. Serve alone or add to pasta salad or green salad.

This weekend, treat yourself to a culinary vacay featuring PEI Mussels!☀️

Mussels are full of protein, vitamin C, and omega fatty acids, which are essential to the proper functioning of the heart and brain. Try healthy, flavourful, and filling Steamed Mediterranean PEI Mussels - here's how to make it:

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐄𝐈 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐬
🍽: 4
⏱: 12 minutes; cook time: 16 minutes

INGREDIENTS
3 pounds fresh PEI Mussels
1 medium onion, diced
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes, in juice
1/4 cup white wine
1/4 cup chopped Kalamata olives
salt and black pepper, to taste
Fresh chopped parsley and lemon wedges, for garnish

METHOD
1. Rinse fresh PEI Mussels under tap water. Tap any mussels that are still open and discard any that do not close after being tapped and rinsed. Set aside.
2. In a large pot or saucepan, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions and red pepper flakes and cook for 3-4 minutes, until onions have softened. Add the garlic and stir for 1-2 minutes, until aromatic. Add the diced tomatoes and olives and bring to a simmer and continue cooking for another 2 minutes.
3. Add the mussels to the pot and cover. Turn the heat to medium and steam until all the mussels open, about 5-7 minutes, stirring once about halfway through. Feel free to steam for another minute if you see many unopened shells. Remove from heat and discard any shells that did not open after 8 minutes.
4. Sprinkle with parsley before ladling mussels and broth into bowls. Serve immediately with lemon wedges and crusty bread or your favorite pasta, if desired.
