UNGROUNDED FEAR

I wasn't expecting him to show up, he wasn't supposed to. His threat had seemed empty, a desperate attempt to regain control.

But, as he barged into my compound, his fearless stride and determined gaze sent a shiver down my spine. I choked on my Hollandia yogurt, spewing it out in a most unladylike manner. My mom's disapproving frown and my sister's incredulous stare only added to my mortification.

As he approached us, my stomach began to churn, and I felt an urgent need to visit the restroom. But, I couldn't abandon my family, not with him lurking around. He was here for me, and I knew it. Wait... He was really here. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks, leaving me breathless and lightheaded.

He greeted my mom with a charming smile, and I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. "Good afternoon, ma." His voice was smooth, but I detected a hint of menace beneath the surface.

My mom, oblivious to the undercurrents, returned the greeting, and he asked to see me. His gaze never met mine, as if I were invisible. My mom gestured to me, and I rolled my eyes inwardly. Of course, he could see me.

"Thank you mummy." He said and glancing at me, he tilted his head towards the gate and started off.
Mummy? The heck!

Avoiding my mum's gaze, I placed my yogurt down, trying to appear nonchalant, and followed him outside. As soon as we were beyond the gate, he pulled me close, his lips inches from mine. I pushed him back, my heart racing.

"What are you doing here?" I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady.

His eyes darkened, and his voice took on a menacing tone. "I asked you to come, but you never showed up."

"I already told you I don't want any of this."

"Don't play this game with me Honor." He warned. "You either come with me or I go in there and tell your mum that her holy daughter has been going out with men and sleeping with them."

"That's not true. You can't keep threatening me. And you can't keep controlling and ordering me around, you don't own me, neither do I owe you anything."

"Are you talking back?" He growled and my shoulder fell in fear. He grabbed my arm tightly, sinking his long sharp fingers into my sink like talons, making me wince. "Don't dare me Honor. You do as I say or you'll be punished."

"Stop, please. You're hurting me." I whimpered, my eyes wet, feeling my arm already having sore.

"Make your decision."

"I'm not going anywhere with you. I told my parents about you already and you don't want to know what they are planning to do to you if they know the face behind the name." I said, summoning all the boldness I could muster up, and he let go of my arm, but his gaze remained cold, calculating.

For a fleeting moment, I saw fear flicker in his eyes. Then, his mask slipped back into place, and he scowled

"They are ready to find you to the ends of the Earth if you try anything funny with me." I added and he scowled.

He gritted his teeth, fi***ng and unfi***ng his hands. And like that he was gone.

I breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a sense of empowerment wash over me. Maybe, just maybe, I had finally found the courage to stand up for myself.

As I walked back into the house, I knew that I had to tell my parents everything. It was time to speak up, to shed light on the secrets that had been hiding in the shadows. I took a deep breath, ready to face whatever came next. Maybe it just takes speaking up.

BURN OUT

Mia and Sophia were both preparing for their final project in their design class. They were given a brief to create a visual campaign for a new product launch. Mia was frantically typing away on her laptop, her brow furrowed with worry.

"Oh no, oh no, oh no! I'm never going to finish this project on time! What if I fail? What if I don't get an A?" Mia rushed tensed.

Sophia, on the other hand, was sitting calmly, sipping a cup of tea and working on her design at a leisurely pace.

"I've got this," she said to herself. "I've planned well, and I'm on track."

Mia looked over at Sophia, exasperated. "How can you be so calm? Don't you care about our grades?"

Sophia smiled. "Of course, I care. But worrying isn't going to help me. I've prepared well, and I trust myself."

Mia shook her head. "I wish I could be like you. I'm just so anxious all the time."

As the deadline approached, Mia's anxiety reached new heights. She spent every waking moment working on the project, pouring over every detail, and researching new ideas.
Sophia, on the other hand, worked steadily, taking breaks and practicing self-care. She submitted her project on time, feeling confident and proud.

But Mia didn't stop there. Even after submitting the project, she continued to work on it, convinced that she could make it even better. She spent hours tweaking the design, rewriting the copy, and perfecting the presentation.
Finally, after weeks of intense work, Mia submitted her revised project. She was exhausted, stressed, and burnt out.

When the grades were announced, both Mia and Sophia received an A. But while Sophia was relieved and happy, Mia felt drained and unfulfilled.

"I don't get it," Mia said to Sophia. "I worked so much harder than you, but we got the same grade."

Sophia smiled gently. "Maybe that's the point. You don't have to kill yourself to get good results. Sometimes, it's okay to trust yourself and let go."

Mia looked at Sophia, realizing that she had a point. Maybe it was time to reevaluate her approach to work and life. Maybe it was time to learn to let go.

How to Build Emotional Resilience in Difficult Times: My Personal Journey

Life has a way of testing us when we least expect it. I’ve faced moments when everything seemed overwhelming—grief, disappointment, and personal challenges that shook me to my core. But through those experiences, I’ve learned that emotional resilience isn’t about avoiding pain; it’s about finding strength in the midst of it.

Here’s how I built emotional resilience during my most difficult seasons, and how you can too:

1. Acknowledging Your Pain, Not Suppressing It

I used to believe being strong meant hiding my emotions. When I lost my mum, I felt like I had to keep it together for everyone else. But suppressing grief only made the pain linger longer. I learned that true strength begins with acknowledging your feelings—whether it’s sadness, anger, or fear. Journaling became my outlet, allowing me to express emotions I couldn't always say out loud.

Lesson: Let yourself feel. It’s okay to cry, to grieve, to feel frustrated. Emotional resilience grows when we face our emotions, not when we avoid them.

2. Leaning on Faith and a Support System

During difficult times, I often felt isolated, but I wasn’t alone. My faith in God became my anchor. Prayer and scriptures reminded me that even in my weakest moments, I was held by a strength greater than mine.

I also learned to lean on the people God placed in my life—my friends, my mentor who’s always been there, and my school mom, who stood by me with prayers and encouragement. Being vulnerable with them allowed me to receive the comfort I needed.

Lesson: Don’t isolate yourself. Lean on faith, family, and friends. Resilience is often built in a community, not in solitude.

3. Practicing Self-Compassion

I’m naturally someone who cares deeply for others, but there were times I forgot to extend that same kindness to myself. I would blame myself for not being “strong enough” or for struggling with challenges.

I had to learn that being resilient doesn’t mean being perfect. It means giving yourself grace when you stumble. Simple habits like daily affirmations, reminding myself that I am a warrior queen, helped me reframe how I saw myself.

Lesson: Speak kindly to yourself. Remind yourself that you are doing the best you can, and that's enough.

4. Finding Purpose in Pain

When I look back, some of the most painful moments in my life have also shaped me into a more compassionate and understanding person. Losing my mum, for example, taught me the importance of valuing relationships and being present for others. It made me want to be there for people going through loss, too.

Lesson: Sometimes, our pain holds the power to help others heal. Look for ways to turn your struggles into purpose.

5. Setting Healthy Boundaries and Prioritizing Self-Care

There came a point where I realized I couldn’t pour from an empty cup. Saying “yes” to everyone else while neglecting my well-being left me exhausted. Learning to set healthy boundaries—whether it was taking time to rest, saying no when I felt overwhelmed, or prioritizing moments of peace—became crucial in my healing.

Lesson: Emotional resilience involves protecting your peace. Take care of yourself so you can show up stronger for others.

6. Focusing on Growth, Not Perfection

I’m still learning, still healing, still growing. Some days feel easier than others. But emotional resilience isn’t about having it all figured out—it’s about choosing to keep going, even when the path feels uncertain.

What I know now is this: You are stronger than you think. Life’s challenges don’t define you; how you rise through them does.

You’re not alone in your struggles. Keep going. You’re building a strength that will carry you through anything life brings your way.

UNBROKEN SPIRIT

I hate to read about it because when I do, it drops my joy by a hundred percent. I recoil at the thought of reading, hearing, talking or discussing about it, as the words sear my soul, eroding my happiness and leaving an unshakeable sense of despair. Yet, I feel compelled to write about it, because it's the only way I know how to voice out my anger and fight back. It's the cathartic expression of my outrage and a desperate attempt to resist the darkness.

But when I revisit my own writings, I'm overcome with emotion, succumbing to uncontrollable tears. I weep for the irreparable damage it inflicts, the stigma that perpetuates silence, and the trauma that lingers, a constant reminder of the suffering. It's an egregious affront to humanity, a malevolent force that's appalling, atrocious, and demonic. The callous disregard for female's dignity is a painful one.

I wanna let it go, I really yearn to release the burden, to break free from the shackles of pain and trauma. But it's impossible. Triggers surround me, lurking in every corner, waiting to pounce and transport me back to a place I'd rather forget.
On the streets, I see the faces of those who in their hands, I've suffered, my eyes haunted by the memories of what they've done to me. In my neighborhood, I hear the whispers of gossip and judgment, the stigmatizing words that cut deep. And in my mind, the memories linger, refusing to fade.

How do you find peace after inflicting pain on another? Do you sleep soundly, unaware of the anguish you've caused? Do you savor each meal, oblivious to the appetite lose you've created in someone else? Can you laugh wholeheartedly, unmoved by the tears you've brought to another's eyes?
How do you go about your daily routine, unaffected by the suffering you've inflicted and the stigma you've perpetuated? Do you ever stop to consider the weight of your actions, the crushing blow you've dealt to another's soul?

Well, I don't care, and I hope you don't cause the Lord is gonna fight for her and she will hold her peace. He will arise as her champion, vanquishing the darkness that has haunted her. Your malevolent grip, which has sought to suffocate her spirit, will be shattered. No longer will she be held captive by the shackles of fear, torment, and abuse.
No longer will she be tormented by your bad behavior. No longer is she going to have the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.

As a sacred vessel, a holy temple, she will be purified and redeemed. The Lord will restore her to a state of unblemished radiance, untainted by the defilement you've inflicted. Your attempts to mar her beauty, to shatter her soul, and to silence her voice will be rendered null and void.
Your reign of terror, built upon a foundation of manipulation, violence, and abuse, will be demolished. The Lord has ordained her liberation, and you will be powerless to prevent it. She will be delivered from the crushing weight of her past, the suffocating grip of her present, and the ominous shadows of her future.

You have inflicted irreparable harm, but the Lord will heal her wounds. You have sought to destroy her, but the Lord will rebuild her. You have endeavored to silence her, but the Lord will amplify her voice.
She will not just rise above the storm, but come out stronger.

Recognizing the Silent Signs of Stress and Burnout

A few months ago, I found myself constantly exhausted, even after a full night’s sleep. Tasks that once felt easy felt overwhelming, and I started forgetting small things—like where I kept my keys or missing important dates. I brushed it off, thinking I just needed to "push through." But the fatigue lingered, and I noticed I was getting irritated more easily, withdrawing from friends, and losing interest in things I once loved. It took me a while to realize I wasn't just tired—I was experiencing burnout.

Stress and burnout can creep in quietly, often disguised as just "being busy." If you’ve been feeling off lately, it might be more than just a rough patch. Understanding the silent signs can help you catch it early and take steps to protect your well-being.

What Is Stress and Burnout?

Stress is your body’s natural reaction to pressure or challenges. In small doses, it can be motivating, but when it becomes chronic, it can take a toll on your health.
Burnout, however, is deeper. It’s the emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, often leaving you feeling detached and unmotivated.

Silent Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

1. Constant Fatigue and Low Energy
If you’re waking up tired despite sleeping well, or feeling drained throughout the day, it could be a sign your body and mind are overworked.

2. Irritability and Mood Swings
Little things setting you off more than usual? Stress can make you feel emotionally reactive, leading to sudden mood swings or feelings of frustration.

3. Difficulty Concentrating and Forgetfulness
Struggling to focus or remember simple tasks? Chronic stress can impair cognitive function, making everyday tasks feel mentally draining.

4. Physical Symptoms Without Clear Cause
Headaches, muscle tension, stomach issues, and even chest pain can often be linked to stress, even when medical tests come back clear.

5. Changes in Sleep Patterns
I went through a phase where I’d either sleep too much or not sleep at all. Stress can disrupt your sleep cycle, making it hard to feel rested.

6. Loss of Interest and Motivation
Hobbies, social outings, or even work you once enjoyed might feel like chores, a sign of emotional exhaustion.

7. Procrastination and Decreased Productivity
Tasks you could once manage with ease might feel overwhelming, leading to avoidance or procrastination.

8. Increased Isolation
I caught myself declining invitations and avoiding calls from loved ones. Withdrawing from social connections can be a silent cry for help.

9. Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms
If you find yourself turning to binge-watching, overeating, or excessive screen time to "numb" the stress, it could be a sign of deeper burnout.

10. Frequent Illnesses
Stress can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to frequent colds, infections, or slow recovery times.

How to Manage Stress and Prevent Burnout

What helped me break free from that overwhelming cycle was learning to slow down and prioritize my well-being. Here’s what worked:

Self-Care: I began making sleep, healthy eating, and daily movement a priority.

Setting Boundaries: I learned to say no without guilt and stopped overcommitting.

Time Management: Breaking tasks into smaller steps made everything feel more manageable.

Connecting with Loved Ones: Opening up to a friend was a game-changer. Sometimes, sharing how you feel lightens the load.

Mindfulness Practices: Journaling and deep breathing exercises helped me stay grounded.

Seeking Support: Speaking with a mentor and seeking professional guidance made me feel less alone.

Final Thoughts

Stress and burnout don’t just "go away" by ignoring them. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to slow down and care for yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Listen to your body, reach out for help, and remember—you’re not alone in this journey.

Finer Than Gold

He listens to my endless whinnying and nagging without judging. He always lends his ears and shoulders to me even when I become self-destructive. He gets angry at me for not taking proper care of myself and never thinks it twice before granting any of my request. Even when he's busy, he's always near. Ready to listen, ready to help, ready to comfort.

That's a friend! One who's invested in you. One who prioritizes and cares about you and your well-being. One who listens to your endless lamentations and woes. One who makes out time for you and values your relationship. One who doesn't only share in your laughter and adventures, but also in your pains and sad moments. One who you don't just tell your memories to, but makes them with you. One who helps you through tough times and sticks with you through thick and thin. One who would not be in your funeral, but be in jail for murdering the person who murdered you. That's a friend.

Friends are found everywhere, but true friends are a rare breed, scattered throughout our lives like precious gems, and hard to come by. They might be childhood companions, classmates, colleagues, neighbors, or relatives. The common thread that binds them is their capacity to enrich our lives, bringing joy, meaning, and depth to our existence.
Ultimately, a friend is someone who makes your life richer, happier, and more meaningful.

A true friend is a treasure to behold. They offer a comforting presence that calms the soul. They lend a sympathetic ear and a supportive shoulder. They're not just passive recipients of your memories; they're active participants, creating new experiences with you that become treasured recollections. Through life's trials and tribulations, they stand by your side, offering strength and solace. Their loyalty is unwavering, and they'd go to great lengths to protect and support you. Their concern for you knows no bounds, and they'll often express frustration when you neglect your own needs.
This unwavering dedication is a hallmark of genuine friendship.

If you are fortunate enough to have a friend who puts you first even before themselves or immediately after themselves, set your pride aside and

As the snowflakes gently fall, casting a serene silence over the world, our hearts beat with excitement and joy. For in this magical time of year, we gather 'round to celebrate the spirit of love, kindness, and generosity that defines the Christmas season.

Like a masterpiece of twinkling lights, Christmas wraps our lives in a warm, golden glow. It's a time for cozying up by the fire, sharing stories of yesteryear, and making new memories with loved ones. The air is alive with the sweet scent of sugar cookies, the sound of carolers filling the air, and the sparkle of decorations that transform our homes into winter wonderlands.

As we exchange gifts, we're reminded that the true magic of Christmas lies not in the presents themselves, but in the love, thought, and effort that goes into selecting each one. It's a time to show appreciation for those who bring joy and meaning to our lives, and to express gratitude for the blessings we often take for granted.

In the midst of all the merriment, let's not forget the true essence of Christmas: the values of compassion, empathy, and kindness that guide us toward a more harmonious world. As we celebrate the birth of a symbol of hope and love, let's strive to embody those qualities in our own lives, spreading warmth and cheer to all those around us.

So as the night falls, and the stars twinkle like diamonds in the sky, we wish you a Christmas that's merry, bright, and filled with all the things that bring you joy. May your heart be light, your spirit be lifted, and your life be filled with love, laughter, and all the magic of the season.

From DreamAlive to yours, warmest wishes for a wonderful Christmas!
