Welcome to

The Kingdom of Bhutan is seeing a big jump in tourists, thanks to its visa-free travel program for citizens of Bangladesh, India, and the Maldives! This move is designed to attract more visitors and give a boost to the kingdom's tourism industry.

Bhutan, known for its stunning monasteries, fortresses, and breathtaking landscapes, has something for everyone—from the subtropical plains to the steep mountains and valleys. Peaks like the 7,326m Jomolhari in the High Himalayas are a must-visit for trekking enthusiasts.

In 2024, Bhutan welcomed 25,000 tourists, with India being the top source. March 2024 was the third busiest month since reopening, with 14,822 arrivals. The top ten tourist arrivals over the past eight months include visitors from India, the United States, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, and more.

By the end of 2023, Bhutan's GDP was estimated at USD 11 billion in purchasing power parity terms. Paro International Airport, the main gateway to Bhutan, handles around 300,000 outbound passengers annually, playing a vital role in connecting Bhutan with the world and supporting its tourism industry.

Paro, with its peaceful atmosphere, rich cultural heritage, and famous landmarks like the Tiger's Nest Monastery, is a top destination for travelers. Meanwhile, Thimphu, the capital city, offers a unique blend of traditional and modern attractions, including the majestic Tashichho Dzong and the lively Thimphu Market. The city’s charm lies in its seamless mix of the old and the new.

Come and explore the magical kingdom of Bhutan!

Applying for a visa (or permit) to Bhutan is simple. All visitors must have a visa and permit before traveling to Bhutan (except for tourists from India who can obtain a permit on arrival and those from Maldives and Bangladesh who can also obtain a visa on arrival). Visitors apply online for a visa or permit or via a Bhutanese Tour Operator. It takes around five days to process a visa.
All guests must pay Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per person per night (Concessionary rates apply for children) and a non-refundable, one-off visa application fee of USD 40. Indian guests pay SDF of Nu/INR. 1,200 per person per night. The SDF funds important cultural, environmental, health and educational projects across Bhutan.

Wondering where to find adventure and joy packed together. Think about visiting with to find in your journeys

Bhutan is pure magic. I’m fortunate to have gone twice: in 2009 & 2017. It’s one of the few places that lives up to the hype surrounding its mystery. Bhutan is a unique place in the world. From the crazy Paro airport approach, to the flag, to the dzongs, archery and lovely people-to the abundance of phallus (yes, phallus) everywhere-you will remember your trip to Bhutan. The place where gross national happiness is said to be more important than gross national product.

By far, the most famous site in Bhutan is Taktshang Goemba, otherwise known as the Tigers Nest. It’s a monastery perched on the side of a sheer cliff about 1000 meters above the Paro Valley below. The only sounds are the sound of the waterfall accompanying the monastery and the chanting monks who pray in the nest.

It is called the Tigers Nest because the Bhutanese believe that Guru Rinpoche flew to the site of the monastery on the back of a tigress, a manifestation of his consort to subdue the local demon. He then meditated in the cave for three months.

The site has suffered two fires, the most recent in 1998 and was finally completed and re-opened to tourists in 2005-those who can make the hike.

The hike is relatively arduous to the point where I took this photo. Then you have to walk down about 400 wet steps; cross the waterfall; and then up another 300 steps to the Tigers Nest. You hike from 7500 feet to 11,500 feet so altitude could be a problem. It takes most people 2 hours to get up. I am a good hiker and was able to make it in an hour each time. There’s a horse option if you’re unable.

You’re not allowed to take photos inside the monastery; which is a series of temples. It’s a peaceful, fascinating place in a jaw dropping setting. The monks are true believers, dedicated to their beliefs. It’s awesome to behold. I once named the Tigers Nest as the greatest man made site in the world. I still think so.
