I’ve been fishing Roger Case since 1996, and at 78 years old, I recently asked him how is golf game was going and he sadly replied. that it was very frustrating he can’t hit the ball like he use to. I replied, that’s the great thing about fly fishing, age is not a factor, any day can produce a “fish of a lifetime” well that’s exactly what happened when Roger landed this 36 pound Trophy! Loomis NRX+, Abel Super 9, Airflo Type 3 Sink, and Steve Adachii Rattle Clouser!

Very fortunate I got to spend early October at the Greenbrier in West Virginia and then take in my first Steeler game with this amazing woman. 22 years of marriage to this old fishing guide and she still gets up every day with me providing my clients and I with wonderful lunches. Definitely a keeper!

Nothing quite like getting a very healthy wild Steelhead on the Lower Sac. Angler Steve Montgomery caught this gorgeous fish on a #14 Birdsnest nymph on a 5wt Loomis NRX and an ancient 1936 Hardy Agate reel!

Sydnie Kohara with a couple of fantastic August stripers in the mid to upper teens! Kudos to Airflo, the new Steamer Max Short, is my favorite line while targeting Linesiders in 3 to 8 foot depths, also very thankful for Steve Adachi’s Rattle Clousers!

Last cast of the trip back in 2015, while fishing with my childhood best friend, Jeff Solis and my longtime buddy and guide Captain Justin Rea. Overcast, bad light, white sand, swimming ocean fish and I screwed the cast up trying launch my fly like I was casting to stripers with a shooting head. Fortunately I was able to regroup and present the fly to the last tarpon in the string, and the rest is history!

Found this little critter trying to swim across a very rough San Joaquin River this morning. Despite attempting his best Michael Phelps imitation, this young Great Horned Owl didn’t have many minutes left. Seven hours later after a boat rescue and a trip to the Animal Rescue Hospital thanks to a Good Samaritan, he will live to fly another day!

Sometimes as a guide I feel cheated when we catch a big Linesider that doesn’t quite make into the 20lb club, but releasing these incredible specimens is a beacon of hope that we might have another encounter with an even bigger Striper down the road!

I’m always amazed at how voracious stripers are. In their infancy they learn to attack prey with reckless abandonment, and unfortunately,that “devouring” bad ass attitude can often lead to their demise! I think gluttony is a major part of their DNA!
