Seeing the northern lights is often just luck, being in the right place at the right time. And we were!!
It had been a very cloudy evening while we were eating dinner in our little hut. There were just a couple of stars out when we started hiking back down the mountain. The wind picked up and the clouds disappeared within minutes.
Jon noticed a cloudy streak in the sky and wondered out loud whether it might be the lights. I took a photo with my phone and immediately could see colored streaks. The group stood in the cold as we took pics and watched as this “cloud” changed colors and shape, going from multi-colored (which we hear is quite rare) to green to massively wide.
My photos couldn’t capture the fact that this stretched from the horizon to well over our heads and nearly to the far side of the sky.
It’s worth noting that these were taken with my iPhone 16. And also interesting that we checked with people who were just a couple of miles away in the village and all they could see were clouds.
