GallivantinGreg ~ Travel Blog Every summer thousands of young Brits travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the sunny shores of the USA to work as a counselor at an American summer camp.

I’ve taken the flight from London to New York every summer since 2010, full of excitement and anticipation at spending the next nine weeks teaching swimming, singing camp songs and toasting marshmallows around the fire every night. But this year, my journey to camp is going to be a little different. In fact, it’s going to be very different! I’m going to be taking The Long Way to Camp. Setting out

from freezing cold London in February I’m going to be travelling across southern Europe, heading north to St Petersburg, boarding the Trans-Siberian Express, winding through China and south east Asia before boarding a freight ship across the Pacific to Los Angeles. From the south west corner of the USA, I’ll be journeying across America before arriving, thousands of miles and four months later, at Camp Sloane in Connecticut. Crucially, my feet won’t leave terra firm. No flights are allowed!

Fare thee well France. Guapa and I are off back to London after 6 and a half weeks of stunning cycling, fantastic football and a lot of good food, Airbnb hosts and adventures. The French foray is over. I spent today doing all the tourist sites in París that are free for EU citizens - who knows what I'll be classed as next time I'm on the continent! All that's left to say is, as always after one of these cycle trips, thank you / merci to all the people in France who welcomed me, hosted me, fed me, drank with me, mistook me for a local, and, most of all, showed me the true identity of this great country. Au revoir!
