Calles y Sueños - Chicago Calles y Sueños - Chicago During this period, many Latin Americans were compelled to flee their countries and sought political asylum in the United States.

ABOUT
(desplazar hacia abajo para español)

Calles y Sueños-Chicago is a cultural space that provides a platform for the creativity of Latinos in Chicago’s marginalized working-class/ immigrant neighborhoods. The cultural politics and social sensibility of Calles y Sueños is deeply informed by the social unrest experienced in Latin American countries dur

ing the 1970’s and 1980’s — a period marked by dictatorships, revolutionary movements, coup de etats, military repression, censorship, persecution, torture, kidnappings, economic instability, and diverse forms of social unrest. Among them were painters, writers, musicians, poets, intellectuals, activists, and cultural and community organizers, including some of those who would eventually become the founding members of Calles y Sueños. In Chicago, artists and activists organized cultural events that reflected upon the social conflicts in Latin America, but also expounded upon the new cultural and political challenges that they experienced in the United States. To this day, Calles y Sueños maintains that cultural organizing is a vital means for exploring, understanding, and transcending political, economic, and social injustice. The name Calles y Sueños (Streets and Dreams) is derived from a compilation of poems by the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. The poems reflect his feelings of loneliness and social isolation as a foreigner in New York City. Calles y Sueños responds to the alienation and cultural marginalization within Latino communities by cultivating a space for art and culture in the widest sense. Calles y Sueños has been an art gallery, concert hall, cinema, performance space, theatre, and a multi-faceted venue for popular education. Best known as a gallery where artists from throughout the Americas have presented their work, the space has also hosted live performances of music, dance, and poetry. The space has also hosted workshops, drawing and acting classes, study groups, book clubs, urban history tours, and lectures.

“The rhythmic “sabrosisima” of Oveja Negra, combines Cumbia, Ska, Reggae, Punk and Calypso to create their own original style they call Punk-Steady.

Since 2018, Emcee Shannon “SKB” Blunt began writing for Oveja Negra., His glorious rebel lyrics and chants connected instantly with the booming drum and bass, psychedelic funky tunes, and the Afro-Caribbean influences of the band.

Their most recent video “Healing Generation” is a reflection on finding the balance between body, soul, and mind. It focuses on the human need to grow, change and evolve together while making us dance.

Dear Friends,
Clinard Dance is fundraising until the last day of this year. In 2023 we are expanding Flamenco de Barrio en Barrio, where we turn neighborhood histories into flamenco music and dance with Chicago blues and jazz—-including the story of doña Araceli who is shown in the photo below. Flamenco de Barrio en Barrio has already included Pilsen, Back of the Yards and in Spain neighborhoods like Cano Roto. We have many more local barrios to involve in this program which you can help support today! Go to link to donate. Thank you! http://www.clinardance.org/sponsors
