"Traveling the world isn't just fun and exciting; there's ample research to suggest it's highly beneficial for your physical, mental, and emotional health as well", says Larry Alton of NBC News. Alton's report states that traveling makes you healthier, it helps to relieve stress, it enhances your creativity, it boosts happiness and satisfaction, and it lowers the risk of depression. That's a lot to gain just from packing your bags and visiting places you've never been.

ATHENS, GREECE

Athens is a must-see destination on any European vacation. The capital and largest city in Greece, it’s also been the center of Greek civilization for 4,000 years. Athens may be an ancient city, but it has a contemporary atmosphere with an active restaurant, bar and nightlife scene.

The Mediterranean climate of Athens makes for hot and dry summers (with an average temperature of 92 degrees in July) and mild winters with moderate rainfall (with an average temperature of 48 degrees in January). Since it can be very hot and dry in the summer and occasionally rainy or snow in the winter, the best times of the year to visit Athens are spring and late fall. The winter, however, is the low season for tourism, so travelers may find the city to be less busy with tourists then.

Since Greece is part of the European Union, the official currency of Athens is the Euro. U.S. currency can easily be exchanged for Euros at banks, post offices, travel bureaus and foreign exchange offices in Athens. If travelers don’t want to exchange their currency, almost all hotels, shops and restaurants accept credit cards.

Athens is a world center for archaeological research, making it an ideal vacation destination for any history buffs. It is home to one of the most important international archaeological museums, the National Archeological Museum. Its collection of artifacts covers a period of time of more than 5,000 years. The Acropolis, a hilltop citadel that includes ancient monuments like the Parthenon, is also located in Athens. A visit to the Ancient Agora allows visitors to enjoy a beautiful view of the Acropolis as well as the Temple of Hephaestus, the best-preserved ancient Greek temple. The Acropolis is also listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it’s the most complete collection of Ancient Greek monuments still existing. It truly is a necessary place to visit when in Athens.

Though history is big in Athens, there are other aspects to the city to appeal to other travelers. Athens has been slowly reinventing itself by turning congested downtown streets into pedestrian walkways; revamping hotels, museums and archeological sites; building the state-of-the-art Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport; and expanding the Athens Metro system.

The city's culinary scene is bustling and ever-evolving. Travelers can find many types of food and restaurants, from tavernas serving traditional Greek cuisine to modern and award-winning restaurants. There are many wine and cocktail bars serving wines and other beverages from all over the world.

How to Travel Between Caribbean Islands
Cruise To Caribbean With Palm tree On Coral Beach Island hopping is one of the best ways to see all of the riches the Caribbean has to offer. After all, while you’ll find glistening turquoise waters everywhere you go, each island has its own unique history, culture, and even distinct ecosystems, everything from thick jungles to expansive wetlands, from lush coral reefs to mangrove forests.

How to travel from one island to the next, however, is another matter altogether. Each approach to island hopping has its own logistical challenges.

If you plan it right, though, you can have an adventure-packed vacation, bouncing among any number of the approximately 700 islands in the region.

Here’s how to travel between Caribbean islands.

Take A Cruise

The easiest way to travel between Caribbean islands is by booking a cruise, whether on one of the mega-ships from companies like Royal Caribbean or Carnival or on a smaller carrier like Windstar.

There are several drawbacks to taking this route: You don’t get to pick which islands you visit, and you’re on a ship with thousands of other people, meaning that almost everywhere you go is going to be packed with other tourists.

You also generally tend to spend a day or less in each destination, meaning that, depending on how you like to travel, you might feel that you don’t get enough time to explore what each island has to offer.

Ferry Around

Traveling by ferry is one of the most beautiful ways to get around. You can enjoy the cool breeze, the bright sun, and the beautiful water as your water chariot rushes from one island to the next. No worries about getting back to port before your floating city takes off without you; no need to waste time at an airport.

While there’s no unified ferry system throughout the region, you can find ferries that will take you from island to island. For example, while there are no ferries that go to or from Barbados, the British Virgin Islands has an extensive intra-BVI system that makes hopping from island to island relatively easy. This is a low-cost option that allows you to determine your own island destiny.

Take Flight

Of course, time is of the essence when you’re trying to hit all the sights and relax. If you don’t want to waste time chugging along on a ferry, there are plenty of regional and international airlines that serve any number of islands.

Another reason to consider flying? If you’d like to visit more off-the-beaten-path islands without shelling out for a private yacht, some smaller islands are only served via plane from other Caribbean destinations.

Condé Nast Traveler compiled a list of the safest airlines in the Caribbean, which operate crafts as big as giant Airbuses and as small as nine-seaters. Plan accordingly.

Charter A Yacht

This is one of the best—and priciest—ways to hop around the region. If you’re willing to shell out a pretty penny, you can charter your own crew to sail from port to port, making your own itinerary based on whatever your heart desires.

Generally, this means you’ll have a full crew, kitchen and wait staff included, which means plenty of time to relax while cruising through the beautiful, calm surf.

No matter which way you choose to travel around the Caribbean, your best bet for saving money and avoiding the logistical headache of planning is to work with a travel advisor.

We are trained to build relationships with trusted travel partners, ensuring that you get the best prices available—without the agent fees.

We’ll develop an island-hopping itinerary that works for you. Share your preferences. Tell us about your dream adventure to paradise. We’ll handle the rest.

The Best Caribbean Islands for Family Vacations

When you’re a parent, there’s nothing better than seeing your children have fun. The stress of planning a family vacation, however, could be enough to turn anyone off of the task.

Unless, of course, you head to the Caribbean, the paradisiacal region full of calm waters, incredible food, and tons of adventure just a stone’s throw from the U.S.

All of these islands will offer snorkeling, beautiful beaches, and a wide variety of dining options that almost always factor in kids’ palates. So instead, we focused on the unique activities that make our picks the best Caribbean islands for family vacations.

The Bahamas
With more than 700 islands to choose from, the Bahamas offers an almost endless array of activities for every kind of traveler—especially those with kids to entertain.

If your kids are water bugs, for example, you could take them to Pirate’s Cove Zipline and Water Park on Grand Bahama, where they can exhaust themselves on a zipline then relax by the beach. (Or at the very least, play in the nearby sea while you relax on the beach.)

There is also Aquaventure, located at the famed Atlantis Hotel on Paradise Island, home to nine water slides and myriad other activities. For the more adventurous in your family, there’s even one slide that offers a near-vertical drop—straight down into an acrylic tunnel surrounded by marine life.

And of course, there’s the Pirates of Nassau, an interactive experience located in the heart of Nassau, where the whole family can learn about the history of smuggling and piracy and decide if the pirate’s life is the one for them.

Mexican Caribbean
While this is not technically an island, it’s a Caribbean destination that you do not want to miss if you’re planning a vacation with kids.

Head to the Azul Beach Resort Sensatori in the Cancún region, where they offer an all-inclusive experience tailormade for families. Don’t worry about lugging a stroller or crib or even packing enough diapers; they have everything you might need on hand.

Feel free to drop your kids at the Azulitos Playhouse, where they can spend the day learning about the local ecosystem, splashing through a mini waterpark, or just building sandcastles.

Have teenagers? They have their own dedicated clubhouse, where they can meet other teens on vacation, play foosball, and relax. And Azul is owned by Karisma, the company helming a slate of Nickelodeon-themed hotels in the Caribbean, which means the occasional breakfast with Nickelodeon characters.

The U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix)
If you want your family to get the Caribbean experience without worrying about passports, head to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

You can find rugged adventure or something a little more fantastic here. Go ziplining and hiking through the jungle on St. Thomas, or if you want to experience everything the marine life has to offer, head to Coral World Ocean Park, an “indoor-outdoor aquarium” also located on St. Thomas. Watch the park’s sea lions sing for their supper, and snuba (scuba without the heavy tank on your back) through an enormous coral reef brimming with life.

If you have a fantasy fan on your hands, head to St. John to swim with mermaids at Mermaid Swim VI—a dream come true.

Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is another no-passport-required option, and the small island packs a punch. Whether you stay in San Juan and walk around the historical center or post up at a resort outside of town, kids of all ages will be happy as clams exploring the Island of Enchantment.

As much as it’s celebrated for its culture, Puerto Rico also offers outdoor adventures for the whole family. Head to Vieques, a small island to the east of Puerto Rico, to check out its population of wild horses. Visit the unique and beautiful bioluminescent bays, or hike in El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system.

The Cayman Islands
Located to the south of Cuba, the Caymans are three islands with some of the best beaches and snorkeling in the region.

The real draw, however? The whole family can take a boat trip out to Stingray City, a group of sandbars that is home to an enormous (and docile) stingray population. Guides pick up rays and perch them on your head, let you pet them, and show you how they eat, breath, and move.

If these shark relatives freak your family out, you could instead head to the Cayman Turtle Centre, a wildlife experience with a bird sanctuary, turtle encounters, crocodiles, and even the largest swimming pool on the island.

Planning a Caribbean vacation for your family can be stressful and time-consuming—so leave it to the experts. As your personal Travel Advisor I will build the perfect kid-friendly adventure for you at no additional cost. Tell me more about your preferences, and I'll take it from there.
