View looking up from the Quinta da Regaleira in Portugal. This is one of those places that you can see pictures of and watch videos, but it's very different when you are actually there.

This "inverted tower" was said to be used as a place for initiation of new members. Reports say these ranged from freemasons, templars, and spiritual initiations.

Enter the slot into this circular descending stairway, and your senses are immediately hit with changes. The air becones damp and heavy. The sound becomes muted and muffled. As you continue down, down, down the circular stairs, all of this increases as it gets darker and wetter. Sounds echo in the chamber. Symbols start to emerge. It's an experience to be sure.
And I believe it's one that will be different based on what you bring into it.

Some say these initiates were blindfolded for their journey down into the earth in the Quinta da Regaleira. They wouldn't allow that nowadays~ but just imagine for a moment the transformative experience of those that did.

The Quinta da Regaleira was made to represent the 9 circles of Dante's Inferno, and they were asked to reflect on the way down.

The cold emanates from the stone walls as you descend further and further. What do you think they thought about as they walked, blindfolded and tentative into the depths they could not see?

This was a poignant and beautiful place to see.
