# New Australian Ambassador to Sweden Announced
We are happy to welcome Mr Jonathan Kenna as Australia's next Ambassador to Sweden, and thank the outgoing ambassador, Mr Gerald Thomson, for his great work bringing Sweden and Australia ever closer together since 2013.

A great piece on Channel 7 on the growth of Aussie Rules Football in Sweden. We (SwedesInAustralia.com) were very proud sponsors of the Swedish National AFL Team - The Swedish Elks - when they played in the the International Championships in Melbourne last year, and it's awesome to see the continued rise of footy in Sweden. Great work by the team behind AFL Sweden to build up a solid following for the sport in Sweden.

Playing around with MapFrappe - a pretty cool Google Maps service - allows one to overlay different parts of the world for size comparisons. Very useful if you're an expat Swede with only a rough idea of how large Australia is.

For all you Swedes visiting Sydney; here is first greater Sydney outlined in purple, and then that outline is overlaid on top of Stockholm, Malmö/Copenhagen, and Gothenburg.

For comparison, the population of the cities + satellite towns are:
* Greater Sydney: circa 5 million;
* Greater Stockholm: circa 2.2 million;
* Greater Copenhagen and Skåne: circa 3.9 million;
* Greater Gothenburg: circa 1 million.

So; in case you missed this weekend's Eurovision Final, the highlights were:

1: The Swedish jury and public gave Australia their highest score in the voting (just like last year). Straya; 12 points!
2: Dami kicked ass and pretty much locked in Australia now being a permanent fixture in the contest.
3: This interval act might have been the most gloriously over-the-top song of the whole evening...

IT’S official: Our favourite European country, Australia, is through to the Eurovision Grand Final. For the next week, we are no longer Swedes in Australia, but Strayans taking over Sweden. Bring the pain to those dirty good-for-nothing Swedes, Dami! .

Some useful tips as we gear up for Eurovision. For those of you not quite fluent in Swedish; here are the Swedish idioms they're referring to:

* To beat around the bush = Att gå som katten runt het gröt
* No worries = Ingen ko på isen
* They're wasted = De är på kanelen
* To seek revenge = Att ge igen för gammal ost
* You have a skeleton in your closet = Du har inte rent mjöl i påsen
* There's something fishy going on here! = Här ligger en hund begravd!
* You're raging mad! = Du är skogstokig!

(And if you use these old-style idioms in actual conversation, most Swedes born 1950 and later will think that you've taken dad-joking to the next level.)

"From Swedish backpacker to Australian hero".

Swedish backpacker Robin Lassinniemi is the man of the moment after saving the victim of a coward's punch from being killed by the train. What a legend. Wherever you are, Robin, we hope people are coming up shouting you beers all night.

A Swedish backpacker has been identified as the Good Samaritan who dragged an injured young man from rail tracks, minutes before a train arrived.

On January 24 we organised a Swedish-Australian harbour cruise to celebrate that our Facebook group "Svenskar i Sydney" had reached 10.000 members. And because we felt like throwing a massive party! :)

Around 140 Sydney long-timers and new arrivals met up, and good times were had by all.

Thanks to all the volunteers, staff, and fabulous and beatiful guests who made our first Harbour Cruise a great success. We are already planning to make this a yearly event, and to set up something similar again for next year.

Thanks everyone for coming and for being part of the community!

So we may have rented a boat. And a photo booth. And some DJ equipment. And two DJs, and lighting, and are looking forward to see 150 people come join us on the harbour tomorrow afternoon. And there is a guest list waiting for us at Cargo Bar in Darling Harbour afterwards.

If you have tomorrow evening (24/1) free and are in Sydney, we still have 40 or so tickets left on the boat. Great if you are the type of person who enjoys hanging out with cool and hip Swedish-Australians on the water. Or if you just want to start your Straya Day celebrations a tad early. Dresscode: sandals and socks.
