Thanksgiving Day in Baja...The wind was blowing, hard. Approaching Laguna Chapala (Dry Lake bed) we saw an ominous dust cloud. I blows nasty there at times, and this was no summer breeze. At a couple points it was so bad we could barely see the lines on the road! Others following in caravan couldn't see our tail lights. We met cars and trucks oncoming so we knew there was an exit at some point. A mile or 2 of white knuckle Baja driving got us out the other side intact. Considered shelter at CoCo's Corner, he said to stay there for free. But the wind lightened a bit in the mountains so we pressed on to San Felipe and numerous margaritas to calm the nerves. Baja... you never really know what's coming. You just deal with it.

Rancho Grande "Didn't have our reservation" so we improvised at Campo Beluga, a KM or so down the road. Had been wanting to check this place anyways. Was awesome, but watch for soft sand on the way in and out. Charged A LOT for boondocking ($25 rig) That's full hookup rate in Baja. The beach was awesome though so I shut up and paid it.

Beautiful rising moon as the sun is setting and drinking margaritas with friends. It doesn't get much better than this!

One of our favorite drives in Baja is to take the Carretera Federal 2D from Tecate south to Mexicali. We call it the La Rumorosa Toll road. Traveling this road offers amazing panoramic views from the summit of 4,193’. From the top you can see for miles. The rock formations created by erosion are unique and beautiful.
It’s on the dangerous road list due to the wind in the region, hairpin turns, sheer drops and the steep grade of the road. This road has humbled many egos. Even on our last trip Don and I had a few moments where we held our breath as Semi-trucks passed us on corners as we pulled our travel trailer.
La Rumorosa owes its name to the sound of the wind, which when it hits its rock formations, voices seem to be heard. There are many legends surrounding La Rumorosa. If you find yourself traveling at night with no moon, it is said that there is an old lady that will ask you for a ride, but after you pick her up and drive a few miles, she disappears.
Before the road was improved, drivers nicknamed it “la carretera de la muerte” (the highway of death) because it only had two lanes. Now the Road has two lanes in each direction, guard rails and many areas to pull off and take in the spectacular views.
