"Let me recount an amazing ritual around intentions that a friend recently described. Apparently, in some parts of Africa, when a mother conceives, she writes a song for her child and sings it to the baby in her womb all through the pregnancy. When the child is born, the village comes together to sing the same song for the child. Any time the baby cries, the mother sings that song to comfort him or her." Vineet Nayar

"Racial healing is an ongoing journey. I think of it as a bridge that requires building both the pillars and the midsections. Pillars are the affinity groups– communities of people with similar experiences. Midsections are the solidarity groups–communities of people with different experiences. This week, a few sister-colleagues and I are offering an inside view on our affinity processes and our personal journeys, in the hope it can support other whites build communities that support reclaiming our humanity, beyond whiteness itself. "There is so much violence in the world. It takes a tremendous amount of courage—every single day to wake up and remember the love, believe in the love, practice the love, that neutralizes fear and violence. It’s a moment by moment choice. I long for the time that humanity will expand our capacity to love that will end the war in Ucraine. But also everywhere else." http://www.drritawrites.com/day-22-which-war-aches-the-most/

Ucraine, I’m sorry. I have a hard time feeling sad and outraged for you. Not because what is happening isn’t awful. But because, there are so many other tragedies I’m still grieving. I’m pi**ed about what violence generates outrage and what is considered “normal.” I ache as to why people...

I asked my music mentor one day, what he believed united us as Italians. I was curious about his answer. I had my own ideas, ideas I still have a tough time putting in writing. Italy is an extremely young nation. We became a nation only in 1861--without Rome as capital. Rome was annexed in...

Thursday night I went to and open-mic event in Philly. It was raw, it was profound, it was alive. Just the way I love my art. And it was a lot more than that, too. It was a space of ancestral healing. Two poets did more than recite poems: they channeled on stage the physical,...
