Kavvayi Kayal is among the most fascinating backwater destinations in Kerala. This lesser known destination is the result of the five rivers viz. River Kavvayi and its tributary streams Kankol, Vannathichal, Kuppithodu, and Kuniyan. Kavvayi refers to a collection of small islands connected to Payyannur in Kannur by a bridge. It has been bestowed with many a natural gift and is considered among the most exotic locations in North Kerala.
These backwaters form the biggest wetland in north Kerala with an area of roughly 37 sq km. Most locations in Munnar are generally known for their slopes, rare fauna and a wonderful view of the valley. Vattavada, however, is known for its vegetables. These terraced slopes and valleys, located 45 km to the east of Munnar, contain some of the finest crops and produce in all of Kerala.

Situated 6500 ft. above sea level, people visit this exceptional destination in large numbers. It is known for its equable climate and is blessed with abundant sunlight throughout the year. The slopes of the multi-coloured vegetable fields are dotted with various forest patches. One can see beautiful trees like Eucalyptus and Conifers in these parts. |The place takes the name from the legendary Pandavas, as described in the great Indian epic 'Mahabharata'. Pandavan Para or the Rock of the Pandavas, located at Urukunnu, near Thenmala in Kollam District is an ideal picnic spot. At the base of the great hill where one finds this pristine location, lies a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Here one can feast one’s eyes on different angles of Thenmala including the adjoining hills, forests, the Kallada Dam and the lake behind it and the railway line that passes by the mountain bases and over arched stone bridges. At the summit, be prepared for a rocky outcrop, with two pedestal rocks on the northern side and a temple towards the south. Crisp and chilly winds greet you, while our sight is guided to the eastern flank, where our ancient heroes are said to have taken refuge.

This Namboothiri (Brahmin) ancestral home has a 500-year-old history of being famed practitioners of Ayurveda, Kalari, Yoga, music and many other performing arts. Some of the most well-known members of the family include Sri. Poomully Raman Namboothiripad, the genius pupil of the famous Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, and Sri. Anjengo Fort is forever remembered in the pantheons of history as the location of the first trade settlement of the East India Company in Kerala. Legend has it that the English were given this site by the Queen of Attingal for trade purposes. Anjengo or Anjuthenguwas a small stretch of land with five coconut trees at the time and the fort was named after the same. The old English Fort that once stood here would be constantly attacked by foreign powers for centuries.

Gavi Eco-Tourism , a project of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation, has caught the attention of tourists for a while now. The project is exclusive in many respects and the majority who visited were nature lovers and adventure tourists. Over a short period of time visitors to Gavi gradually increased, especially after 'Alistair International' the world-acclaimed tourism major listed it among the leading eco-tourism centres and one of the must-see places in India.

A highlight of the Gavi Eco Project is the involvement of the local populace in its activities as guides, gardeners and cooks. This provides livelihood for the locals and also helps to create awareness on the conservation of nature. Gavi, located in Pathanamthitta district offers its visitors activities like trekking, wildlife watching, outdoor camping in specially built tents and night safaris.

The road leading to Gavi is blanketed by tea plantations, which itself is a refreshing experience. En route to Gavi are places of interest like Mundakayyam, Kuttikanam, Peermedu and Vandiperiyar from where the road deviates to Gavi.

Kumbalangi Integrated Tourism Village Project is a unique initiative to transform the tiny island of Kumbalangi into a model fishing village and tourism spot. It is the first of its kind in India and is located in Kochi. It is blessed with many natural wonders and the people who visits are treated to many a rare treat.
Kumbalangi is surrounded by backwaters. Chinese Fishing Nets cover the island and the village boasts of rich aquatic life. An array of mangroves separate land from water and provide for a good breeding ground for prawns, crabs, oysters and small fish.
Palluruthy nearby is coming up in a similar manner. This hamlet provides a close glimpse of the simple lifestyle of villagers who still live by traditions that have been passed down for centuries.

Tea has played an integral part in the history of Munnar. The plantations played a huge role in attracting people to the area. Tata Tea established a Tea Museum in 2005 which has photographs and machineries, which chronicle the journey of tea in the area. The museum set up at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea ensures that the legacy of those who worked hard to ensure the tea plantations survived this long is recognised publicly.

One can observe the history and growth of tea estates in the area. We get to watch the transition from the rudimentary tea roller to the modern fully automated tea factory. Various stages of tea processing can be seen, which includes the making of black tea. One can also see a sundial, placed on a granite block, which was made in 1913 by the Art Industrial School at Nazareth, Tamil Nadu. It has other attractions like the 'Pelton Wheel' used in the power generation plant in the 1920s, tea roller and a rail engine wheel of the Kundale Valley Light Railway.

The Teak Museum in Nilambur celebrates this ancient relationship and takes one on a special journey through history, chronicling teak and its importance in our culture.
