Very proud to again be part of this fantastic effort to better understand volcanoes with the use of drones. Well done everyone involved. Here are some great pics of Fuego volcano from the air.

Pacaya is one of Guatemala's 3 active volcanoes, located just South of Guatemala city. It's just over an hours drive from Antigua and only around a 1.5 hour hike to get to the old crater rim and spectacular views of the active part of the volcano.

I offer day trips leaving Antigua in the morning or in afternoon to catch the sunset down on the coastal plain. Please see website for more details

These pictures were taken on the overnight camping trip to see Fuego volcano erupting. The camp spot is located on the South Western side of Fuego volcano around 4.5km from the crater, at an altitude of 1700m above sea level and only a 2 hour hike.

A tent, sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner and roll mat is provided per person along with dinner (a steak and red wine BBQ dinner with at least 6 vegetarian side dishes), beers, water, park entrance, local porters, breakfast and transfer to Antigua or Lake Atitlan. The trip also includes a basic geology class and discussion on the many hazards the volcano poses to the local community.

This is a spectacular lookout point on the North Western side of Lake Atitlan. The most popular way to do hike is a 45 minute walk from the town of Santa Clara La Laguna to catch the sunrise, but a 2 hour hike from San Juan La Laguna is also available. From the top you can see most of the Atitlan III caldera and 8 volcanoes, including the currently active Fuego volcano near Antigua.

My geological tour aims to explain how Lake Atitlan formed and why you can see a line of 8 volcanoes. In order to fully appreciate the magnitude of the caldera forming eruption, I start right back at the start with the structure of the planet, why that leads to plate tectonics and talk about earthquakes and “normal” volcanoes in order to get a sense of scale for the massive eruption that formed the caldera in which the lake now sits.

On the hike back we talk about the maize fields, coffee plantations and local customs before driving back down to San Marcos, San Pedro or on to Antigua.
