Gorongosa crocodiles and hippo are linked to permanent rivers, pans and Lake Urema. A dedicated aerial count allows researchers to focus only on those two species. We fly the full length of the main rivers and Lake Urema which allows all hippo and crocodiles to be counted.

If we're lucky, most crocodiles are out of the water, sunning themselves on the riverbanks. If it’s very hot, they will be in the water and more difficult to count.

Our 2020 aerial count revealed more than 2,700 crocodiles, their highest count yet, and the highest number of hippo since the civil war. The original hippo population was over 3,000 strong and was reduced to less than 100 animals. Today, Gorongosa’s hippo population has recovered to over 750.

Look closely at this photo of a large hippo pod and you'll see it's surrounded by crocodiles.

In the footsteps of Guides:
“The past few months have brought Gonarezhou record levels of rain. We have received more rain than any other year since the infamous Cyclone Eileen. From our records from the Chilo “weather station”, we have surpassed 1000mm for the rainy season so far. The Lowveld averages 400-500mm annually! Both the mighty Save and Runde rivers have filled right up, bank to bank, as have the pans in the park”. ~ Tor Simonsen, February 2021.

“Castle Gorge”

The Magaliesberg is one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth - worn down by countless millenia of wind and water, once mighty peaks have turned into a landscape of bush, boulders and deeply cloven ravines with clear streams. Adventure paradise.

𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼𝗼! 🐘

A massive elephant bull recently surprised rangers stationed at an anti-poaching base in Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park. Saving The Survivors Wildlife Veterinarian, Dr Joao Almeida, snapped this picture during a visit to the base and says it was amazing to see security efforts paying off in such a manner. The gentle giant calmly walked right up to the tents, a clear sign that the animal felt completely safe in his environment.

Peace Parks and Mozambique’s Administração Nacional das Áreas de Conservação, with support from the Environmental Management and Conservation Trust, have implemented anti-poaching strategies that have had significant successes in securing the park. Over the last five years, field rangers made 211 arrests, recovered 60 fi****ms and 275 gin traps and removed 7 900 snares, saving thousands of animal lives in the process.

Rangers commented that the elephant’s visit felt like a ‘thank you’ and so we join him in saying “Bravo team! We salute your bravery!”

An adventure in Graskop...
The Jock of the Bushveld Trail pays homage to the South African classic novel of Jock of the Bushveld. Written by Sir James Percy-FitzPatrick, the book documents adventures during the 1800s as they trekked through the old Transvaal.

The trail itelf begins in the town of Graskop and is a circular 8km walk that starts and finishes at the horse stables at the end of Bloedrivier Avenue.

The trail leads you to the edge of the escarpment overlooking the breathtaking gorge and leads to a forest of uniquely shaped rocks aptly named Fairyland. A climb to the top of the escarpment leads you to the camp where FitzPatrick and Jock used to stay for the summer. There is a Jock of the Bushveld waymark in the form of an original bronze 'Jock Trek 1885' plaque which pays homage to the loyal and brave canine.

The trail route provides little to no shade, so be prepared. A map can be obtained from the town's local tourism information office.
