Ta Som is a small temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built at the end of the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII. It is located north east of Angkor Thom and just east of Neak Pean. The King dedicated the temple to his father Dharanindravarman II who was King of the Khmer Empire from 1150 to 1160.

There are 6 intangible cultural heritages of Cambodia that have been inscribed on the list. Four elements are on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and two elements are on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

🇰🇭 Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

1- The Royal Ballet of Cambodia, also known as the Khmer Classical Dance, is a highly regarded and traditional dance form that is deeply rooted in Cambodia's culture and history. It has a long and rich heritage dating back centuries and is considered one of the country's most important forms of cultural expression.

2- Sbek Thom is a Khmer shadow theatre that is 2 meters high. The theatre is believed to date back to before the Angkorian period. The performances could only take place on specific occasions three or four times a year, such as the Khmer New Year, the King’s birthday, or the veneration of famous people.

3- L'bengTeanh Prot (Tugging Games): Khmer tradition and culture and historically valuable evidence that can be seen through the carvings on the walls of many temples which tell of the Hindu myth “Churning of the Sea of Milk”. It is commonly played during Khmer New Year.

4- Kun Lbokator is an ancient Khmer martial art dating back to at least the Angkorian period. It includes both armed and unarmed combat techniques. It has a long history in Cambodia and is considered a significant part of the country's cultural heritage.

🇰🇭 Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding

1- Chapei Dang Veng is a type of traditional musical instrument in Cambodian society. The long-necked lute guitar is accompanied by singing which is usually about traditional poems, folk tales, and Buddhist stories.

2-Lkhon Khol Wat Svay Andet is a traditional mask theatre in Cambodia. Having originated in Bhani, a type of drama, mentioned in at least 10th-century inscriptions of Cambodia, Lkhon Khol today is performed by males, wearing masks and accompanied by a traditional Pinpeat orchestra. It performs only episodes from Reamker, a Cambodian version of the Indian Ramayana.

Cambodia's rich intangible cultural heritage is a source of pride for our nation. From traditional masked dramas to enchanting music and dance, these traditions deserve our protection and appreciation.
