For the next several months we will have a monthly post featuring one day of the TT West 2024 drive. This is a preview for the Monday drive of 225 miles from Carmel CA to Mill Valley CA which is just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. We head north from Cambria via the Pacific Coast Highway to Ragged Point, McWay Falls in Big Sur, and lunch in beautiful and charming Carmel-by-the-Sea. In my opinion, the morning drive is one of the top 5 in the West. In the afternoon we continue along the coast with a stop at Pebble Beach at Bean Hollow State Beach (which is different than the Pebble Beach golf resort in Carmel) and end at the Golden Gate Bridge vista and hiking area immediately after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. Note that as of today, our route for the Monday morning drive is closed due to a landslide last year. Landslides from winter rains are a frequent occurrence along this route although reconstruction usually is done in a matter of months but last year’s floods were exceptional and the road is expected to re-open in late Spring. If by the time of registration in March the route is still scheduled to be closed during TT West, we will start the drive in Carmel and the morning drive will be either a round trip to Big Sur (this portion of the Pacific Coast Highway is presently open) or the drive the famed 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach. The selection will be made by a vote of the participants.

The last TT was driven off of the assembly line recently. Commemorating that fact, Audi is sending 50 "Final Edition" TTs to the US.

Before it bows out, we get a new grey over green package with a heritage-inspired interior.

AndyCharger, a friend from Audi TT internet forums from the UK, asked me if he could do a video of my TT during his visit to Las Vegas. He is very active in the UK TT community and has lots of TT videos posted on Youtube. You can also find him on Facebook. This is the fantastic result. Some caveats on my spur of the moment comments in the video. US sales of the Mk 1 TT were about 30,000 total, not per year as I stated. Andy mentioned that the UK Mk 1 was offered with red seats with ballglove stitching. He shows me talking about the Moccasin Red seats in the Neiman-Marcus edition and I did not think to mention the red seats in the ALMS edition. However, neither had ballgove stitching. In fact, the N-M "red" looks identical to the brown ballglove in the Mk 1 roadster.

When in Vegas, Take a tour of the Las Vegas Strip. There you will find all of the hotels and Vegas Casinos in one place.I was lucky enough to take an open to...

TT West 2024 – Seashells and Redwoods along the California and Oregon Coast

This 975 mile trip follows the Pacific coast from central California to Corvallis, Oregon. We start in the beautiful seaside town of Cambria California. The Monday morning drive is, in my opinion, one of the top five scenic drives in the Western USA. We head north on the Pacific Coast Highway via Ragged Point, McWay Falls in Big Sur, and lunch in the most charming town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. In the afternoon we continue along the coast, stopping at Bean Hollow State Beach and end at the Golden Gate Bridge.

The drive Tuesday will begin by following challenging Ridgecrest Boulevard through the Muir Woods and Mount Tamalpais areas as we head to the Pacific Coast Highway to an overnight in Fort Bragg. Stops along the way include the lighthouse and sea lions in Point Reyes National Seashore and the coastal vistas at Manchester State Park.

Wednesday we follow the PCH to Eureka, visiting beaches and Giant Redwood forests along this trip that includes the Redwood Highway and the Avenue of the Giants, a 31 mile scenic drive through redwood forests. Thursday we enter the Oregon coast and see more Redwood forests and beaches ending at Coos Bay. Friday continues north along the coast to Newport and then we head inland via the twisties of the Oregon rain forest to Corvallis, Oregon.

The tentative dates for TT West are 23-27 September. It is possible, but unlikely, that the dates might change when final arrangements for hotels are made in March when registration for TT West will start.

Note that as of January 2024, our route for the Monday morning drive is closed due to a landslide last winter. Landslides from winter rains are a frequent occurrence along this route although reconstruction usually is done in a matter of months, but last year’s floods were exceptional. The road is scheduled to reopen in late Spring 2024. However, rains between now and March could delay that opening and/or wash out new areas. If in March the route is scheduled to be closed during the time period of TT West, we will start the drive in Carmel and the morning drive will be either a round trip to Big Sur (this portion of the Pacific Coast Highway is presently open) or the drive the famed 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach. The selection will be made by a vote of the participants.

TT West is an Audi Club of North America sanctioned event and all drivers must be members at the time of registration. All drivers and passengers must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the drive. The itinerary is subject to change at any time, even during the ex*****on of the drive. TT West is limited to 20 cars and registration usually fills up in a few weeks. People on the TT West mailing list get a chance to register before registration is announced on this web site.

The Wednesday drive for TT West spanned 230 miles from Silver City NM to Alamogordo NM. The original plan was to include the mountain twisties of the Geronimo Scenic Byway but it was closed for repairs. As a result, the day was mostly staright line driving. We made interesting stops at Rock City State Park and the recently reopened White Sands Missile range museum.

Today TT West had its longest and most challenging drive of the event covering over 330 miles. We left Winslow AZ, stopped at the Petrified Forest National Monument, and then experienced the Route 191 Coronado Scenic Byway through the mountains of Eastern Arizona. The Byway is about 100 miles with 460 curves. Elevations run up to 9000'. It is the least traveled Federal highway. We passed one car during our Byway entire drive. Afterwards, we traveled Route 78 through the Apache National Forest that has even more twisties. I was concerned that Route 191 would be plagued by pot holes that are everywhere in Northern Arizona due to record snowfall but Route 191 was in excellent condition. The photos were taken at the Red Mountain Overlook on the Byway.

We started our day standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona.

Here are some pictures from today’s drive. Montezuma Castle National Monument and of our attempt at Sedona, which failed due to a massive traffic jam caused by road construction.

It was still a great day with fun had by all.
