The Origin of West Coast Wine Routes

As a young kid in the 60’s, my dad Basie, was the Manager/Winemaker of the Lutzville Co-op wine cellars where I followed him and learned the processes. In the 70’s he started his own little wine farm in Koekenaap and in the latter years I helped him on the farm(s), after being a SAAF Pilot and a stint at AEB in Pretoria where my interest computers started.

After leaving after a four-year period on the farm, I went fully into software development and the last 20+ years I worked at Namakwa Sands Koekenaap as and IT Engineer – Systems. That is software development in all its forms, and lots of ideas and visions. This was also the start of the Internet Dotcom period and with my brother on the farms now, I re-kindled my interest in the winemaking process and done courses in Wine making, tasting and Marketing. Unfortunately, my day-to-day task was to extreme to really pursue the dream of marketing wine and through the years I saw a lack of proper Wine Route websites and hence the birth of an idea, as I did plenty at Namakwa Sands. And with this the concept of an under-one-roof West Coast Wine Route website kicked off.

A Journey of wine routes in the Western Cape Region, from Darling, traversing Malmesbury and Riebeek Kasteel, on the N7 through Swartland, over Piekenierskloof in the Cedar mountains where the highest situated wine farm is and down to Namaqua West Coast which host the now famous Madeliefie Makitie Festival at Strandfontein.
